Should I get a PC-FX?

Post by BoneSnapDeez »

Looks kinda cool, but I don't know much about it. All the games are Japanese of course... a lot of them appear to be, ya know, "h games". I love NEC systems, would this be a wise purchase?

Short answer, no.

Long answer here: http://www.pcenginefx.com/PC-FX/

If you have a TG/PCE CDROM and Arcade card but you still need your NEC fix, buy a SuperGrafx first. To get much out of a PC-FX, you'll need to know Japanese. There is Zenki(fighter), Zeroigar(shmup) and Chip Chan Kick(puzzle) that need no knowledge of the language but after that you're gonna be lost unless you just like to watch anime cutscene openings.

There is a cool factor, it's neat to own but your not gonna play it much.

Well I do know some Japanese, I wouldn't consider the console at all otherwise.

I have a really hard time finding SuperGrafx stuff online. Did this console have a lower print run or something? The PC-FX games and systems seem much easier to find.

And thanks for the link, I had no idea there was a site dedicated to such an obscure console!

I think I'll hold off on this purchase and get a Wonder Swan Color next. Seems more practical.

I think you would be better off just sticking to Pc engine. Pc FX does not have too many notable games imo.

PASS

Some of the RPG's are really nice for their time, but it's not that fun playing with so much Jp text.

I had one for a while, and it was really just a novelty.

That site is for all the NEC systems not just PC-FX. The SuperGrafx had like 5 games so yeah, you're not gonna find much for it. Majors can correct me, but I believe it will play PCE games too.

Should you get a PC-FX?

Probably not. I've owned a few before, and sold a few (well, a dozen or more :D ). It's pretty much a pointless console unless you really like VERY Japanese games (manga games, dating sims, strategy RPGs, etc.). Majors listed most of the worthwhile games on the console; all of which go for a few hundred dollars each (I am not joking). There are a few cool FMV fighters like Battle Heat, which is cool the first few times you play it and also quite cheap.

At least there's no copy protection, so you can try before you buy.

So, unless you are the kind of guy who wants to collect every obscure console, skip the FX. Even if you know Japanese, probably skip it.

If you want more NEC, then yeah, get an Arcade Card for your Super CD system and/or a Super Grafx. The Super Grafx only had 7 games released for it; 2 of which are just enhanced PC Engine games that work on a regular PC Engine anyway.

Definitely hit up PCEngineFX.com if you are looking get more into the system. I'm a regular active member there (although I use a different username), and so are a few other members here. It's the only forum where I've actually had a chance to hang out with some of the other people there. Most everyone there is really cool and will treat you like gold once we know you well (kind of like at Neo-Geo.com).
