PS2 slim did lose the HDD slot (needed for FFXI) but does have a built-in IR receiver for the DVD remote, IIRC.
Best hardware revision of all time?
Re: Best hardware revision of all time?
DS Lite, hands down, didn't lose anything (actually added a GBA slot cover!), and made the DS sexier!
And the PSP did follow that, -2000/3000 are much better than the original one (thou both lose the metal parts on the surface)

I did not know that. So you can't play FFXI at all on a PS2 Slim?skyknight wrote:PS2 slim did lose the HDD slot (needed for FFXI) but does have a built-in IR receiver for the DVD remote, IIRC.

Maybe I should have written that in blue fontdeathsled wrote:I don't think that really counts as a hardware revision considering it's not put out by Sega and it's (I'm pretty sure) an emulation based system with no capability to play cartridges.xan_racketBOY_fan wrote:

Re: Best hardware revision of all time?
The handhelds definitely have a legacy of good hardware revisions, and I definitely agree that the GBA SP is one of the best (especially considering it retained full backwards compatibility). The DS Lite was also an excellent upgrade.
Another hardware revision not mentioned yet is the Model NES-101 "Top Loader".
From

When these came out, I appreciated the easier cartridge snap-in and the rounded, SNES-inspired controllers which were far more comfortable. I don't think there were any actual internal upgrades, but those two features, along with the smaller, lighter console were definitely welcome.
Sony did a similar aesthetic upgrade of the original Playstation around the release of the ps2 with the "psone". It looked much nicer, but the one I bought had a broken spin motor, despite it being brand new, so I don't think very highly of that model.

The original DS had that... It's called a GBA game.skyknight wrote:didn't lose anything (actually added a GBA slot cover!)

Re: Best hardware revision of all time?
Outside of the Famicom to the AV System ... I'd argue DS to DS Lite too.
GBA SP had a lot of advantages ... but it also did some stuff that detracted (like the form factor)
The only downside to the DS redesign was that GBA games weren't flush to the system. And the gloss finish has a tendency to get scratched up.
The CDX is a good one too.

PS2 Slim, CDi 450 and Sega CDX. All of them made the product alot smaller and compact and PS2 Slim and CDi450 went from front loading trays to top loadinng mechanism, which is a good thing

Although they went from Famicom to NES so the Top Loader model is just a welcome step backwards in the consoles evolution, so I wouldnt count itethinethin wrote: Another hardware revision not mentioned yet is the Model NES-101 "Top Loader".
