PC Gamer has some great writers and columns. They cover games old and new, and everything they talk about is for PC, so I can theoretically play any of the games that they talk about.

I'm surprised nobody else mentioned this, but perhaps it's too niche to be in your local magazine racks.

This magazine has some lovely glossy pages with excellent graphic design. I flip through it for the pretty pictures when I wonder in the magazine shop.

PC Gamer is alright, but even they are susceptible to mono-platform fanboyism from time to time. Retro Gamer is a good read. I still haven't checked out the new GameFan. I always liked the layout in the original, and what was in Gamer's Republic, and Play, so I might take a peek at some point.

There's plenty of long gone magazines that I still care about as well. I loved EGM and GameFan in the 90s, but my favorite was VG&CE during the Andy Eddy years. Such a good magazine back then.

Retro Gamer was mentioned at least once, most recently by retrosportsgamer.

I serendipitously came across one issue of it in a donations bin and enjoyed it, but haven't given it an in-depth look.

While GameFan's opinions are ... questionable, at best ... their magazine is ludicrously gorgeous. And at the very least it's just mostly talking about games they enjoyed (rather than a comprehensive review source)

I do like the current EGM ... and I'm still a sucker for Nintendo Power. (I actually got my subscription issue today and it had some Kid Icarus Uprising cards in it)

Retrogamer is pretty sweet too.

100th Issue of Retro Gamer Magazine - $14.99
Did you get yours yet? Just hit the newstands in the U.S. a month after release in the U.K. There were only three on the shelf, glad I snagged one.

In comparing the 1st issue reprint to my original, an exact duplicate except for a "wear" printed into the front cover and inner pages. I think a bad move to add fake wear to the reprint, but it does identify it easily as a reprint and keeps the original 1st edition release valuable to a collector. Unfortunately, there is no game disc DVD case included in the reprint. One of the articles in the first issue has Emulation information supplemented by the disc. The disc has the emulators and over 200 Retro game remakes.

The 100th issue is pretty good, has articles of key game authors and good round of memorable games reviewed. I hate stickers on my game cases, but don't mind the U.K. UPC sticker, I think it adds to the value here in the U.S. 8)

Costs $14.99 in the store here before taxes. After taxes, gas and shipping it will probably cost around twenty five to thirty bucks. Shipping might be cheaper if sent by Media Mail. Maybe your local bookstore can have one special ordered while its still in circulation?

Hey you guys, quick little lesson. I personally collect issues of PSM, though I am a fan of other PlayStation related mags as well. Sometimes when people offer me issues of PSM, they are confused and actually own a different mag. Here's a quick rundown of what I'm talking about. These are three major PlayStation magazines that were available in the US. There's others in the UK that maybe I'll outline some other time.

Image

PSM

Years: 1997-2007
Publisher: Future Publishing

PSM's thing was that it was independent. I like that a lot because it seemed like a lot of the reviews were a little less press release-ish. They also used to give away free crap that they'd make like stickers or memory card labels or posters. Really cool. And one of the major things I love is that PSM always used original art for the covers. Though a lot of the art was bad, it gave it a very unique and unified feel over the years. This is the magazine that I actively collect (so if anyone has any issues they want to get rid of please DO let me know).

Image

Official PlayStation Magazine

AKA: OPM
Years: 1997-2007
Publisher: Ziff Davis Media

Ok, so this was PSM's main competition. And I do like this magazine a lot too. I have a little pile of these as well. This was of course the officially endorsed by Sony magazine. What it's most known for is that every issue was packaged with demo discs. These demo discs followed the generations, so there were PS1 discs, PS2 discs, and correct me if I'm wrong here (I didn't pay close attention toward the end of the mag's life) but I'm pretty sure there were PSP and PS3 demos. Fans of 1UP.com should also take notice that much of that site's website worked on OPM.

Image

PlayStation: The Official Magazine

AKA: PTOM
Years: 2007-current
Publisher: Future Publishing

Now here's where it gets really confusing. PSM and Official PlayStation Magazine both died off in 2007. However, the staff of PSM started a new official magazine to cover all things PlayStation and called it PlayStation The Official Magazine. See? That's confusing. The independent mag became the official mag, and used a very similar title as the mag they used to be in competition with. Anyway, this is the magazine that is still on newstands today, and it does not come with demo discs.

You guys got all that? :|
