So Half Life 1&2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R, Deus Ex, System Shock 2 and Bioshock arent first person shooters? Im not saying that every FPS game has to have a good storyline. Whats wrong with releasing a multiplayer only game? Many of the best FPS games of all time had nothing but online, because that what the games were about, competing against other players.
Don't all of those except the Half-Life games have RPG elements mixed in?

You're kidding, right? Have you actually played any of the single players since Call of Duty 2? Honestly, I think my 2nd grade cousin could write a better storyline. As for the local multiplayer...I go back to what I've said since the 6th gen ended; no bots = minimal fun.
umm black ops had bots...

If by RPG elements you mean that you can make a choice between hacking and blowing up doors and wheter to specialize in assault rifles or shotguns then yes, but ultimately all of those games except STALKER are mostly linear run n shoot games.
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

One exception hardly redeems the genre.

A storyline is NOT too much to ask for in an FPS. Go play Red Steel 2 (ignore the first one; it was shit). The Conduit, while incredibly cliche, had an amusing story. Mass Effect, although an RPG, is still an FPS (going by definition, anyway). Halo (at the least the first three in the main series and Reach) had good stories. Technically speaking, the Metroid Prime series was (it was in first person, and you shot shit; that's the definition of a "first person shooter").

My point is, if you're going to put single player in a game, make it not suck my balls. Counter Strike: Source didn't have a single player, and that was okay; at least they didn't take a shit on a computer and call it a campaign like Activision does.

I always just thought that the huge price differences was simply because most people cant read Japanese, sure there are some genres that dont matter as much (fighters/shmups) but I would not be picking up a JPN region Panzer dragoon Saga, as I would not want to play the entire game with a guide on all of the text.

I can get behind that. UT and Q3 had a single player mode which was just playing against increasingly hard bots in the multiplayer matches, so it really was just a training mode. There was a bit of an excuse plot behind why the world exists but they didn't try for any character arcs or anything. Then UT3 tried to put in a story and the story was terrible (not to mention porting over the crazy character designs from Gears).

That's exactly why although I'm tempted to have my SNES modified to play Japanese games and order Mother 2, I know I won't. I'd miss the story just because I can't read Japanese. :(

Oh, I adore Unreal Tournament, but I even find that insulting just a little bit (although I admit, because it is just training mode essentially, it's not as bad in my eyes).

This little debate actually inspired a blog post. lol

I think it's worthwhile to have the training mode single player so that you can get used to the maps. Deathmatch is one thing, but you want to know the paths through CTF or Assault and you're better off learning it before you play with real people.

If Japan ever falls in love with the FPS genre, they will be worth a ton.
By the time they have any historic value, they are worthless as you cant host your own servers in CoD and in console FPS games in general
100% incorrect, you can use programs like xbox connect of xlink kai to play online with others. Halo 2 still has a decent amount of players.
