Now time for Zanac X Zanac!

That is all from downtime at work. The game was just too brutal to beat RNG's score.

From a practice run a week ago just to get on the board. I hope to greatly improve this when I get back home from Seattle.

First of all. thanks to Bruno for setting me up with the means to play this game. Sadly, I can't get a good screenshot quite yet, I may use my my phone for future screens.

The score DOES read :

2,645,700 -- Hammer Duke -- Area 5 (6 counting Pre-Stage Area 0)

My thoughts

A worthy update on the classic Zanac. Plays almost exactly the same with the exception of the different ships (more on that later). The Charge Shot each ship has can be held down to power you up for the duration of the meter at the bottom or released for a bomb with a powerful area-effect that chains nearby enemies for extra points. A score like mine or even that 4 million from Hashi is entirely possible due to the Compile tradition of copious amounts of lives (had I not died I probably would have had 10-15 reserve ships). 1cc is possible here and so are much better scores. NOT technically a bullet hell game, but the action on screen can reach that point very fast. Area 4 (Area 5 w/ pre-stage) last boss has been the hardest to beat so far.

The ships

After playing all 3 ships, I found they almost act like the ones in 19XX: The War Against Destiny. No kidding.

Scar Face -- Compared to the Lightning. Good speed and weapon power.
Hammer Duke -- Compared to the Mosquito. Slowest speed but very high powered.
Knife Edge -- Compared to Shinden. Fastest speed but low powered.

The original Zanac ship (FC Custom, Machine 0) is also available by inputting at the ship select screen. Left, Left, Up, Up, L1, R1, L1, R1, L2, R2. Be warned that it will behave exactly like the original ship, no charge shot/bomb, original sub-weapons from the first game and not as powered as the other 3.

There are also hidden objects found in the stages. A fairy (Raiden!) when found will protect your ship from a hit. Also, the "Eye-Eye" will fully power up your main and sub-weapon.

Also, if you see a famous Compile LANDER, be sure to get it for an extra life.

More to come as I play this through much more. Again, higher scores are possible if you don't die a lot.

Been so busy with stupid personal stuff, responsibilities, other games. Bah. Pretty bummed I didn't get into the action much last month because I quite liked that game and will certainly be playing it in the future. Was fun to see you guys were enjoying it and reading your posts though.

Pause the emulator + screen cap? Really though, I'm not worried about fake scores at all from the guys I know. Way too petty for this crowd. So yeah, don't feel obligated to post screens. Although sharing the screenshot does provide a nice sense of fulfillment so if that's where you're coming from I hear you.

Someone is selling a nice Mars Matrix cps2 board over on shmups forums.

http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.ph ... 71#p784471

Its a combined A+B board, so it will work without the need of a motherboard.

Thought someone here might be interested, although I personally will be going the DC route for this game.

Some nice scores so far. This game definitely feels compile. I plan on playing via MAME, but since its not too stable (random slowdown), I don't really want to compete score-wise when I am not playing the game the same as everyone else. Still great to see so many people already getting into this one.

Man, not digging this game at all:/

That Mars Matrix is a much rarer version and more valuable - $185 is a good spot on it. It has the "mated" game board and motherboard, all in one.

It's Compile. I always felt a passion and a spiritual connection to all their games. Raised in the tenets of Guardian Legend. This is a worthy update that captures all the old school goodness Zanac had. It's full of win.
