Re: Thoughts on the original Resident Evil?
While it may not be pretty to look at, and the voice acting is hammier than a sandwich, I still enjoy the game. I personally love all the REs on the PS1 (even Survivor), but that's because it just seems like the games were a little more thought out and the levels are still intriguing.

Re: Thoughts on the original Resident Evil?
Great game that is a must-play for fans of the RE series or survival-horror genre. The opening cutscenes are in full-video, so it really adds that horror-movie vibe. Then the in-game voices start, and you literally will laugh-out-loud because the English voice-acting is CHEESY. But the rest of the game is well-polished for a game of that era. It has great creepy-factor, a good story, intense moments, and cool-looking creatures. It has a very cool-looking environment in the gothic-like mansion. Most of the sequels in the main-series (not counting #5) are better, IMO, though. Don't get me wrong, though, doesn't mean that RE1 is bad, by any means.
I own and played The Director's Cut. So I'm not sure what the differences are exactly between it and the original version, and if that affected my experience much.
The Resident Evil Remake on Gamecube is better in nearly every single way imaginable, though. Especially the graphics, and especially the lighting effects. They did such cool things with the lighting in the remake. And they added just enough for it to feel like a new experience, without crapping all over the original gameplay or story.

Re: Thoughts on the original Resident Evil?
Exactly. It's a classic and I strongly agree on the B-Horror elements which add to it for me being both a huge fan of horror and video games. I'll still pop this into my PS1 on occassion just to relive the memories! Sometimes I'll play the director's cut to change it up a bit.noiseredux wrote:I would not put it in my Top 5, or even 10 or whatever... be I do love it. I first played it when I was about 16. I was on Summer vacation and borrowed the game from my friend. I'd wait until my parents went to bed and then hook up the PS1 to the big(ger) screen in the living room. I just remember being really freaked out by that game. It seemed genuinely scary to me back then.
I think what I love so much about it now is that it's one of the best examples I can think of of a game coming really close to being an interactive horror b-movie. The bad dialogue, the cheap scares, the use of a single set to save budget, etc. I think for someone like me -- with my movie tastes being what they are -- the original RE accomplished something rare. It's just kind of perfect within its own growing pains. Ultimately all those other survival horror games that followed would try to fix up the blemishes of RE, but it was that stuff that really made the experience unique to me.
I am addicted to video games, especially retro gaming from my era. I have: NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Gameboy, GBA, Wii, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I have probably over 1,000 games in total for all these systems combined. Yes, I need help and I wouldn't have it any other way! This is my passion and hey my wife still loves me!!

To me the first Resident Evil and Silent Hill are both two of the greatest console horror games ever
Love the tacky dialogue

Re: Thoughts on the original Resident Evil?
As a gamer who took a bit of a break after the SNES, I remember going to a friends house and seeing the playstation for the 1st time. He fired up Resident Evil, and let me start playing...I walked around the corner to the first Zombie, panicked, wasted all my ammo, and died. I knew then that I must have this game.
Stayed up all night playing in the dark, unable to sleep after the 1st encounter with the dogs.
Bought Resident Evil the next week, two months before I could afford a Playstation....good times.

"Its A WEAPON" and "a DINING ROOM". I think those two quotes sum this game up pretty well
. The game play was interesting for its time and i think it worked fairly well. It was a game where you couldn't just run around shooting everything in sight, you had to actually be kinda smart with your ammo.

Re: Thoughts on the original Resident Evil?
I never could get into the resident evil games, or some of the similar games. I hate the character controls.

Re: Thoughts on the original Resident Evil?
love the series and the original game. July 1996 (I think, maybe 1997) it was my cousin's birthday and his parents got him a playstation so we went to the local blockbuster and rented dark stalkers and resident evil (no memory card mind you). Since that first playthrough I was hooked, and some of my best memories are linked to the series. One of my best friends in college and I would play through basically any/all of the games together trading off playing and keeping the player organized (bullet count, where we were heading to , etc). Whenever we get together since graduation it's always centered around playing RE somehow. The remake is amazing, and would be the only reason for me to own a gamecube and constantly argue over doing so every time I see a copy of the game online or in a store. I myself and very good at RE2, but 1 has a soft spot in my heart always.
