It's just a byproduct of how games developed in America vs. Japan.

Something that makes me pretty happy is that Nintendo is still here putting out great games even 23 years after I first played an NES.

Driving home after getting brand new hardware is an amazing feeling. The anticipation is wonderful. I used to feel that way when I got a new game when I was a kid, but sadly, that has become to common of an occurrence now to have the same effect, maybe if it's one I've REALLY been looking forward to.

Something that makes me really happy is when I can get friends together to either LAN or play some console games. It's always a blast.

Finding a great deal on a game and feeling very satisfied with my purchase is an oddly nice sensation. It's nice to feel like you weren't ripped off :P

Having absolutely no prior obligations, a comfy place to sit and as many hours as I can stay awake to dig into a really great game.

-Discovering that I really enjoy a game that I somehow missed out on and knowing that there are sequels to play when I finish.

-Buying and trading with folks on messageboards and then the waiting to receive little packages in the mail. There's something awesome about receiving "presents" in the mail year-round.

-Sensory overload experiences that can't be found in other media (e.g. Tempest 2000 with a spinner controller in S-Video on a large CRT with the volume cranked way up in a dark room , sitting down in an arcade cab that moves while you play, etc.)

-Going to conventions (big or small) and seeing things that I never thought I'd see in person, meeting people whose work I admire, or sharing a sense of common connection with a room full of strangers.

-Meeting people who were strangers on a message board for a day in NYC or inviting them over to my house for an afternoon to play video games and leaving those meetings with a new group of people that I consider to be friends 8)

-The rush of adrenaline that comes from getting past a particularly tricky part in a challenging game (I'm looking at you, shmups genre).

-The wealth of ideas: there are more previous generation games that interest me than I will ever be able to play and always a deluge of new games that intrigue me as well.

-Surprising people (especially my students) by busting out "obscure" knowledge of gaming at those moments when a question comes up that no one else knows the answer to because they aren't very involved in the hobby and then seeing them light up with silly grins.

-Building an arcade cab was a hell of a lot of fun, and playing on it is a joy as well. I haven't decided which I have appreciated more. I know that my love for gaming motivated me to learn something about woodworking for the first time since 7th grade.

I could probably go on and talk about the things I get to do involving games in different capacities (doing a podcast, writing a book, etc.) or things that have made me happy in particular games, but I won't steal all the ideas.

See, I'm not really a curmudgeonly old man who hates games/gamers!

Obviously, if I didn't get a lot of enjoyment from gaming and being involved in gaming communities, I wouldn't care enough to push it to be (what I consider) even better ;)

I think the single most encouraging thing that gaming has to offer is escapism. To detach yourself from reality and really control someone/something else other than yourself in a safe environment.

Want to go to a fantasy wonderland? Certainly. What about a high tech space age? You betcha. Hell, you wanna kill people? Go for it.

Gaming brings you to new worlds in a way that books or movies simply cannot. And that in large part is due directly to giving the player something to control. If it wasn't this, it'd be traditional role playing games. And thank the divine that those of us who feel silly expressing imaginations openly in adulthood don't have to resort to that. In short, it's either this, or drugs.

Good video game music

Doing World PvP and killing every player you come across in MMORPGs alone, with strangers or with online friends. Hoping that it will escalate to a full scale war between the factions with battles raging all across the zone for hours to come and more and more people coming in to help.

Those eye candy sections in 3D Sonic games where all you do is press forward and watch him go fast

Beautiful background scenery in 2D/2.5D platformers

Doing well in an online FPS. Owning people in Half Life 2 Deathmatch/Day of Defeat Source/Counter Strike Source while listening to Di.FMs Happy Hardcore channel is great

Finding a new console for a good price, coming home with it and testing that it works (and then putting it in some distant corner in your room and never playing it again )

Doing great in a good solo Tower Defence map in Warcraft 3/Frozen Throne.

Games with great enthralling storylines. Deus Ex, Half Life 2, Portal, Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne, Alan Wake, Bioshock...

Doing a succesfull timed run on a good platformer game. Sonic Generations, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Rayman Origins, Crash Bandicoot 3...

Nostalgia - the simple joys of the games I grew up with.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

My favorite part of gaming is something I have only gotten to do once or twice; playing a retro game (preferably 3rd or 4th gen) with a friend for hours and hours on end. The reason I never get to do it is because my friends are either:

Casual gamers (not casual vs hardcore games but casual as in only plays new stuff and only when there's nothing better to do)

Strictly only-the-newest-system gamers, or

Refuse to play games at all. :(

- listening to sound tests (or standing motionless in-game for a few minutes just to listen to some spectacular background music)

- the excitement of triggering a cut-scene

- being inspired to fill little notebooks with scribbles about in-game hints, dialog, passwords, or personal achievements

- wearing chunky headsets and feeling a little bit like a cyborg (or a NASA employee in Mission Control)

- pixels!

- The Sega Saturn's very existence.
- Beating "Hardest/Expert" mode in any game.
- Those late nights with me, tea, and an involved game.
- Ridiculous controllers.
