If you can see the future while remembering the past, you may just have control of the present.

My favorite is Gigawing. Rockin' soundtrack, awesome graphics, 4 different characters to play as, and really fun fast paced gameplay. It's also EXTREMELY difficult, so there is a lot of replay value for those interested in getting high scores. But, have no fear, if you suck at SHMUPS / are new to SHMUPS, the game also has infinite continues.

Zero Gunner 2 is awesome. Now I'm a shmup noob, but have played various ones throughout my gaming lifespan.
Under Defeat is good, but rather salty sometimes.
Gunbird 2 is another, along with Mars Matrix. Played it, but don't have it.

Yeah, Bangai-O is likely going to get shot down as a traditional scrolling shmup because it's a giant hybrid of Action-Adventure and Arena-Shooter. It's still one of the best titles on the DC, and from my understanding, a console near-exclusive. (The N64 version of Bangai-O plays slightly differently with different power-ups, and the HD version on XBL isn't the DC/N64 game at all.)Godot102 wrote:Bangai-o!!!! Surprised no one but Godot mentioned Ikaruga, a great, if short, vertical scrolling shooter.
I am totally behind all the Gunbird 2 love though. Another short vertical game, but it's emphasis is on wacky intertwining storylines, meaning you get endings for each character and each combination of characters. (The SS original forced you to play with a friend to see those; the DC version has 1P-Alt mode.) Plus Gunbird is bullet-focused; no ship-to-ship crashing. And it's very affordable.
I'd mention some of the newer (expensive) shooters like DUX or Under Defeat, but I don't have any experience with those. I would suggest trying Cannon Spike -- it's an arena shooter (Smash TV, Gauntlet, et al.) and a pretty damn good one.
Oh hey, and isn't Twinke Star Sprites on the Dreamcast as well?

Radirgy proves for an interesting 2D shmup. Has a nice artstyle too, imo.

Oh yea I completely forgot about Twinkle Star Sprites! thats a really fun one too. Its kinda like puzzle fighter/puyo puyo meets shmup.pakopako wrote:Yeah, Bangai-O is likely going to get shot down as a traditional scrolling shmup because it's a giant hybrid of Action-Adventure and Arena-Shooter. I actually don't think of Ikaruga as 3D. It looks pretty flat save for the introductions.d123456 wrote:Ehhh, am I the only one who saw 2d in the thread title?
Cannon Spike... OK, that's 3D. But it really does slip my mind considering it's an awesome arena-shooter. There really isn't enough Gauntlet-style games (yeah, Legacy was 3D -- again, sorry, I still can't tell 3D from 2D at this point)

Just select Dreamcast on the right and you should find it.

2D = only scrolling left/right and up/down, there is no 3rd dimension to move in.d123456 wrote:Ehhh, am I the only one who saw 2d in the thread title?
Every game mentioned but Cannon Spike is 2D, and Cannon Spike still deserved mention.
Ikaruga is definitely not 3D. Starfox is 3D.
