What... is this???

Post by pankakes123 »

(Images below)
So I've had this little soccer player figurine in my bedroom for I'd say around 10 years. It's just been a little knick-knack I've kept my entire life because I like soccer. I do not know at all where or how I got it, all I know is, I've had it for a while. Anyway, I was taking a closer look at it when I was bored a couple days ago, and I saw something... peculiar. This figurine has "Dreamcast" written on its shirt! Also, on the base, it has the word "Seaman" engraved into the front of it! It also has the Coca-Cola symbol on the base. You can't actually see the words in the pictures below because I couldn't get my camera to focus enough, but you should be able to get a good idea of what the hell this thing is by looking at the pictures. Also, the #1 is on the player's back. So, my question for you is, WHAT IS THIS??? I can't find any records of this anywhere! Please help, and thanks guys!

If I had to guess, it was a advertising tie in with David Seaman and a Fifa game on Dreamcast.

The player is David Seaman, who is a British Goalkeeper. He played for Arsenal, which at one point was sponsored by the Dreamcast, hence the logo on his shirt.

There are no FIFA games on the Dreamcast. EA refused to produce games for it.

Maybe a tongue in cheek "Ron Jeremy's Seaman!"

David Seaman is/was one of the worlds best football (soccer) goalkeepers.
The figurine is a caricature of him wearing his Arsenal (London team) goalkeepers jersey who, for a time, were sponsored by Sega Dreamcast. (It is indeed 10+ years old).

Hope that helps.

So, is this thing exceedingly common or actually kind of rare? How much are 1940s bobbleheads worth now?

It is a David Seaman Microstar, probably a 2001 version, Microstars were very big in the Uk a few years back, they are still around but you don't see them much.

Normally you get new microstars figures every few months based on different football competitions and there would be ifferent sets you would have to collect each containing 20/30 players, these sets would be updated yearly.
There are sets based off the English Priemer League with at least one player from each of the 20 teams (the reigning champions would normally have 4 players), there were sets based off the World Cup (once every 4 years), sets based off the European Cup (once every 4 years) and sets based off the champions league (a tournament where the best teams in europe play each other, this was yearly). There were also special microstars which could only be bought in special sets.

Before microstars started there were also prostars:

These are much bigger than the microstars figures and you don't use them to play games with like you do with the microstars.

So there you go.

Also to answer the OP, Seaman was the players name, the team he played for, Arsenal had Sega as their kit sponsor at the time.
Arsenal are not the first team to have a company associated with Video games as their sponsor, the team I support, Everton were sponsored by NEC in the 80's and early 90's.
