I have to say, I haven't played many shooters, as in, I haven't played many shooters based around level-design and not mechanics like Robotron or Centipede. And I don't recall the names of any but a couple:

Ikaruga: I played this one for a while, in both DC and GC versions but didn't like it. I don't think I quite get the gameplay.

Keitsu Black Label (NDS port): This is a boss-rush only port of an arcade game, which I haven't played. It has a "coin" mechanic where getting closer to the enemy gives you more points which I liked, even if the flying coins made it harder to see.

I have played some other maniac shooters, but I don't know their names and most were old games emulated in MAME.

Wow, your posts have been really, really good! This is why I come to the forums, to see this kind of stuff, thanks! :)

I think I should watch some videos of the games to get a better idea too.

BTW, what game is "TSS"? I don't see the initials fitting any game, because THE is TriggerHeartExelicaorwhateverwayyouspellthat.

I'll give Gunbird 2 another chance when I'm feeling like a masochist. :D

As far as Shikigami 2, I have never invested much time in the series. Eventually I will! I liked it more than some other DC shmups from what I can remember.. Hmm..

I need to get back in the shmup game. JRPGs keep sucking up all my gaming time.

Twinkle Star Sprites. Kinda a shoot-em-up puzzler. Good 2p.... but still not dodge-based.

Ikaruga is odd. Very different from most shooters. Its all about chaining the black/white enemies in groups of 3, while changing your shiled to absorb the colored bullets.

good game, but very different.

Twinkle Star Sprites. It's a vertical cute em up with some Puyo Puyo puzzle game mechanics.

Not bullet hell at all but very fun to play against friends.

Edit: It's about as far from Cave as it gets. That's why I didn't even try talking more about it earlier.

Ketsui: Death Label is neat, but it is definitely no Ketsui. The game is more made for fans of the original game it feels, but still a cool game.

Do you have an xbox360 or MAME General? There are some fantastic Bullet Hell shooters on both. The DC has a lot of unique shooters that tried to break the mold, so the basic "Dodge these bullets and kill stuff quick" was left behind for a more " look what we can do with shmups"

Not to say they aren't good. They are. They are just not what I think you are looking for right now.
