The new GOG

Post by J T »

GOG has changed their site. It looks a little different now and they have begun to carry new games like Trine and Whispered World. It will also be the launching place for Legends of Grimrock. They no longer adhere to a strict $5.99/$9.99 pricing plan. It's just a different looking gog.com altogether.

We'll see how it pans out. I've always liked gog for its retro nature, but this may end up being good for them.

Huh, pretty minimal change I'd say. Doesn't bother me at all.

No idea how I feel about them swaying away from the old though. I mean, hopefully that'll always and still be their main draw and focus, but yeah. Them doing away with the cheap price tags might be a sign of things to come... makes me think of XBL prices throughout the years and how that's evolved. :?

But whatever, I'll still love them and always go to them before Steam first.

Hopefully they will release new games on MW, old games on TR, and sales on F. That way we get the best of all worlds.

One thing they mentioned was including a better feature for a community wishlist; old games we want on GOG.

That's a good idea. I wanted to buy Quake there yesterday, but they didn't have it so I went to ebay instead.

Could have snagged it off Steam. You don't even need to worry about DRM since the old games don't have integration with Steam, plus you can run the resource files through a source port (which is probably what you want to do anyway).

It was cheaper to get it on ebay.

Getting less excited about this change recently. They need to divide the whole site into old and new I'd say. The more new games that pile up, the more work it'll take to navigate around and just look at older games which I enjoyed doing. Maybe they'll eventually throw in some sorting options or something.

The ability to sort by 'year of release' would be nice as they grow the library.

I also hope they don't lose the retro feel of their site. Though the main draw of GOG for me is DRM-Free games, I would be sad to not see classics up on the main page banners. I love the niche nature of the traditional site and I'm already not liking the look of Assassin's Creed and HOMM V on the main page. It feels soulless. Not because those games are bad. They are both good games. It's just that I see adds for games like that on other sites too, and I can find those games cheaper elsewhere. They are beginning to just be a service where you pay a premium for your game to be DRM-Free. It seems kind of weird to spend money on something that theoretically doesn't have to be in there in the first place.

Ditto, that's exactly what I saw and made me come here to rant a bit about it.
