Master system vs. Nes 8 bit

Post by dreamcast4ever83 »

Ok so I loved the nes it was one of my first systems. I remember getting the nes with duck hunt and Mario and I just freaking loved it! on the same note i felt that master system was overlooked and quite a badass system. There were lots of very good games.

Great sonic games and the graphics and colors kicked butt over the nes from what i remember. I think maby it had to do with the whole video game crash of the atari/coleco age and no one wanting to buy a game system at that time.

I remember Nintendo called it and entertainment system as to not push off the public due to the fact video games had a bad taste in peoples month back in that day (Damn you E.T)

Anyways I honestly felt that the master system was every bit as good as the nes and in many way superior. Then again the coleco vision was way superior to the atari in terms of speed and graphics but they still lost the race.

What do you think? What master system games did you like? Was it as good as Nes?

It is easy to forget that the game market back then was not as 'normalized' as it is now. The Master System, sadly, did not have the same market share as the NES here in America so I did not even know it was a thing that was until I was already an adult.

Even more sadly, Nintendo's licensing practices back in the day were a little...I guess 'fucking evil' is the word for it. Sega was starved for almost all 3rd party support (Hmmm...did Nintendo get some Karma 12 years later?) so there are not that many Master System games that stand out.

Hardware wise, it was a pretty awesome little machine. Too bad its potential mostly went unused.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

No, I emphasized the size of the American market share quite deliberately. If you ask people from Europe or South America how they got their 8-bit on, there is a very good chance they will say Master System. It's only here in the states that the Master System did not catch on hardly at all.

It's in terms of legacy that the Master System suffered the most. Beyond those Sonics you mentioned and a few other (mostly first party) gems, the system had nothing to outshine the Nintendo with.

i have not gotten a chance to play alot of master system games honestly. The ones i did play i thought were very colorful and beautiful but ya i guess there's not alot of great games then huh? Were there any good imports then? considering It did better outside the usa? Any you would consider a hidden gem of sorts? just curious.

Also im looking into starting on my sega cd/32x collection I never got the chance as a child cause we could not afford these systems. Any 32x games that are amazeing?

should i be starting this on a new subject.

Personally, I prefer the Master System to the NES. The colors are brighter, the visuals are crisper, and the system just oozes personality. I even like the D-pad, since it's so unlike anything else.

The Master System did have better looking graphics. But NES's game library was just so much better. Graphics aren't everything. I enjoy my Master System, don't get me wrong, but if it came down to one or the other, then NES would be my pick.

A larger library isn't always better. But it is easier to find some great games on the NES compared to needing to really hunt for the SMS.

The SMS was the better system hardware wise in my opinion (minus a few minor things) and had some great classic games. I'll play WonderBoy II & III over Adventure of Link and Zillion over Metroid.

I like the D-Pad on the SMS over the NES as well.

Can I say I really like the SMS over the NES? Eh...probably not.

Why choose one? The SMS is relatively inexpensive to collect for and has some great titles. Everyone knows the NES, it's great. The SMS though? Most in North America haven't given it proper attention. The graphics are very nice, but the standard sound is poor. If you get a chance to listen to the FM synth versions though, they were much better.

I've found the NES to be way, way cheaper to collect for than the SMS.
