just got a xbox 360 what do i need or play

Hi everyone,
I just got a xbox 360 with 2 controllers and gta liberty city, saints row 2, sega tennis/arcade and I just got gears of war 2. N im afraid of getting the rrod. My system manufactered in july of 2009 and it only has 512 mb of space. I'm getting a 120 gig hard drive from a friend for 30.00 and i want to know what games are a must have for this. Are games the same as games on ps3 like gaphics and gameplay for the same game like street fighter 4? Is online freen like ps3 and is it wireless like wii and ps3? And which halo is most popular to play online or cod for the 360. Any info would help. I'm new at the 360 so help if anyone can.
I also big into retro 2d shooters and arcade or side scrollers.

Xbox Live Gold, which allows for online play, costs money. Varies if bought by month, 3 months, or a year. Is your model a slim? I don't know what year they swapped over. The slims have wireless, while the original needs a wireless adapter or a wired connection. The differences between this and PS3 are negliable. Few and far between. The differences aren't enough to make a difference.

Game wise, you have a whole lot to chose from. When it comes to online play, the current most popular are Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Gears of War 3, and Halo:Reach. There is an Xbox 360 shmup checklist in the shmups forum. It mentions releases for various regions and whether or not they are region free.

I will not suggest games for you, as I have no idea of your tastes. I personally like the whole Gears of War series, Vanquish, Brutal Legend, Viva Pinata, the Bioshock series, and the Mass Effect series. Just some to look into, whether or not your interested.

Games are usually fairly similar compared to PS3 versions, though often one version will be slightly better than the other. SF4, technically, is better on the 360. On the flip side, FFXIII is better on the PS3. It just varies. There are sites that run comparisons fairly often (such as here).

The default gamma differs between the two as well, which can be something to keep in mind with comparison screenshots. It's not uncommon for 360 games to be a bit darker at the same display settings.

'course, if you don't have a PS3, then most of that is fairly moot

Of course the difference is even less, now that people have figured out how to toggle the color options in the Display menu and most developers are comfortable with both systems.

Best advice I can give you:

1. Keep the Xbox in a well ventilated area, and blow the dust out of it if you are able to.
2. Once you get your HDD installed, go and download lots of demos and see what floats your boat! One nice thing about the Xbox is (I believe) they require demos for every game that is for sale on the store.. something that PSN doesn't *always* do.

Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts is an amazing game that's hated by fans because it's not enough like the first two classics and by haters because it has Banjo characters in it. It's basically a customizable spiritual successor to the DC Toy Commander.
