Anyone else feeling apathetic towards un-unique games?

Post by BoringSupreez »

I just realized today that I don't really care about any of the main-series Mario games since SM64, any Zelda games past Wind Waker, or any of the Sonic games since Adventure 2. They lack innovation, and I'm tired of doing the same thing over and over. I have a really hard time getting into a game anymore unless it's "quirky" or unique in some way. Kirby, for example. There's a series I can enjoy. Doesn't have a horrible, split fanbase, the games a relatively low-profile, and they're fun and short. Portal too is one of my favorites. But when given the opportunity to crawl eight more dungeons to save Zelda or told to run through the latest rehash of Emerald Hill, I just don't care. I'd rather have something new like VVVVVV or Bit. Trip Runner.

And it's not just platformers that this applies to. I'm not on fire to play the latest COD, and Uncharted 3 isn't at the top of my want list.

I feel the same way. I find most sequels to be redundant and there are too many interesting games to play another "well made bland" title.

Whenever I see a sequel for most series I never care about, I feel like I am bored to death :| , especially with sports games such as NBA and Madden NFL (which often get very little to no changes besides the roster  :x )

I am only ecstatic whenever there truly a sequel of a series I actually care about  .

Sorry, but this is BS. Super Mario Galaxy, Skyward Sword, and Sonic Generations are all very stylized and innovative. Your either uneducated in terms of modern games, or you are lying for attention. This is a dumb topic.

This is kinda what I was talking about in my innovation during the next console generation thread.

How is Generations innovative in any way? That game is literally nothing but rehashing old Sonic levels. Thats what most Sonic levels have always been really (Casino Night Zone, cosmic casino zone, Carnival Night Zone, Night Carnival Zone, Casino Street zone, Starlight Carnival, Casinopolis etc ), but in Generations they just flat out imported old Sonic levels and changed them a bit.

Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

I wouldn't go so far as to say they simply flat out imported them. That's like saying they pulled them out from a ROM and threw it in a repackaged game. Sure the ideas are the same but they had to be rebuilt and the layouts aren't exactly the same. At least Generations is a rebound for the series and is practically fan service for a series that's gone downhill over the years. Not to mention the 2011 release of Sonic CD, which made and already awesome game even better.

This topic reminded me of an old quote I heard from somewhere. Where Mario fans would be sick of the same old rehashes and want new types of Mario games while Sonic fans would be sick of the modern Sonic games and want the series to go back to its Genesis roots.
What a maneuver!

Well, I honestly feel at this point in the current generation that I'm losing interest FAST!

Street Fighter vs Tekken - Looks and probably plays great. But let's face it... it's basically just another way for Capcom to milk the SFIV-style game engine.

Assassin's Creed 3 - How many fucking AC games do we need this gen? My God, give it a break already!

Call of Duty - This series could use a break, too. I still haven't even finished CoD2 yet!

Playstation Vita launch - A few decent new titles, but most were just dumbed-down PS3 games, much like a lot of the PSP titles were from their bigger brother on PS2.

Nintendo Wii - Ok Nintendo, so you announce the Wii U and then pretty much let the original Wii shit the bed? Nice. Real nice.

Nintendo 3DS - After the big price cut and a couple new releases like Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7, I'm starting to gain a little interest. But what else? Dazzle me, motherfucker!

Microsoft Kinect - Kinect Star Wars better be good or I may never buy this over-priced camera

Sony PS Move - Where the hell is Sorcery already? This peripheral will be dead and buried by the time it comes out!

Sony - Seriously, where is my Ratchet and Clank HD Collection? Also, what's this rumor about you shutting down Zipper Interactive? That would be incredibly stupid. MAG is awesome!

Microsoft - If you release a console that doesn't play used games... you are RETARDED!

Nintendo - So where are these Wii U gameplay vids and screenshots already? Dazzle me, motherfucker!

Currently Playing: Crysis (360), Destiny demo (PS3), Roadblasters (MAME)

Calm down, there's no need to be so rude.

Galaxy is probably the exception when it comes to the Mario series and it looks more like an evolution of SM64 than an unique title. That is not to say it's bad, because it's a great game. All other Mario games use the same design philosophies as the original and do not offer a different premise, they work on the same concepts, for better or worse. They offer different level design, which is good, but often that level design is also based around the same conceps.

Both mario and Zelda are very conservative games both in concept and development, they are well-known for being very well-made but they aren't overly interesting. They are the most basic skeletons for platformers and dungeon crawlers and have no mechanics that shape the game outside of their concept. This is transmited to level design, compared to the quite advanced levels of Sonic, Mario is built around basic concepts of jumping and running. It's more directly tied to the core, so as to speak.

I love Generations and it has great level design. Except I personally hate Planet Wisp and Crisis City. Sure they did redesign the stages (especially the ones that were converted from 2D to 3D and vice versa), added new branches, made the levels longer and so on. But the levels were existing levels from older sonic games. They hade the same name, same visual theme and art style, many parts that were flat out copied from the original stage and they had the same stuff happening, like the police chase in Speed Highway and the lazer shooting robots in Rooftop Run. So its in no way an innovative title by any means, but that does mean that it isnt an enjoyable title. Its a fanboy reaction - you like the new game, so you got to praise it every way you can. Its the same thing with games like Uncharted 3, latest sports game, many different Nintendo titles and Call of Duty, they dont add anything new to the already working formula, or they want to cash with the same game multiple times with just little tweaks like some new guns, a little different roster etc.

This is mostly said by people who don't play sports games... in the end the game is still simulating a sport. So every year madden is still football.... however there are gameplay and ai chnges every release.
