I've wanted to switch also, but I question some things. I've read there are no controller ports on the front. I still want to use my Afterglow. And then there's the licsense transfer, which I've heard nothing but complaints about.

I grabbed a slim as my first 'BOX and love it.

+: super easy to install the old hard drives (no, it should not void your warranty on the xbox, since no modifications are being done to it....ps: holding the drive in place with electrical tape = the way to go)
+: 5 usb ports

-: kinda noisy
-: touch sensitive disk tray/ power....every time you dust, its gonna go berzerk

i happen to like mine a lot

i wouldn't bother transferring hard drives; i'm sure there's a way to recover your account & re-gain all your dlc or live arcade games. you'd basically be sacrificing your warranty to keep your save files.

either way i'd definitely recommend the slim; it's definitely quieter & more reliable. i'm sure there's a basic 'arcade'-esque bundle of the slim you can get for cheaper than the 250gb model as well. i was in your situation; i had the old model that kept crapping out on me; i just eventually sold it & bought the slim & i haven't regretted it. as long as you play the console regularly i'd consider it worth the investment just so you wouldn't have to deal with all that shit anymore.

also to answer your other question the wireless internet connectivity is definitely a lot better on the slim since it's just built into the hardware; you don't have to run a cable through your whole house or drop more money for an external wireless adapter.

i'm not even sure you can still buy the old 360 model new anymore; so if your plan was to buy a second-hand one to last you until the next xbox i wouldn't do it. there's not really a way to tell if someone's selling you one that doesn't already have something wrong with it so you wouldn't really be in that better of a situation.

Jesus, is that what they go for nowadays? Pretty ridiculous given how cheap the materials required to make a transfer cable are, and that actually creating the cable can be done in less than 5 minutes.
Luckily just borrowed it from a friend, lol.

I can definitely agree with others above that the wireless is probably better as well. Have never really had any issues online, compared to the old two systems I had that would drop a connection sometimes. Granted my wireless isn't amazing in general, but yeah the slim seems more stable.

Depends on if you get a 250 GB model or a 4 GB model, but you can easily put the old hdd in the 4GB model (did taht myself, bought an enclosure on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Hard-Disk-Drive-C ... 779&sr=8-1 just pop the old hdd in there, and you have a nice legit looking one.

The redesign is very nice, have not had any issues with it, and I believe it is much more worthwhile than a older arcade unit + a warranty.
If you aren't having a good time, why are you playing?

Here's the thing: I have no access to my XBL account- it runs on my HD but I can't actually log in anywhere because I don't have the password, nor does the email address that I set up the password on exist anymore. I've called Microsoft and they said, in more words, that I'm basically boned on that front.

As such I have no desire to buy games on XBL, I ONLY use the HD at this point for saving in the games I own physical copies of (or, occasionally, playing the games I've previously downloaded, most of which are fighting games anyways). My old HD is a 20gb, I have absolutely zero desire to own a 260gb or whatever size it goes up to.

I wont' be buying it right away regardless as I'm pretty broke right now (I was on vacation all of February), but in a couple of weeks when I do buy it I'll probably just go to a local retailer, the 4gb models sell for 199.99 Canadian.

Thanks for everyone's input! :) I will definitely be getting a slim, soon. The fact that they haven't been having red ring problems is great, I don't want a system that I won't be able to keep for basically ever lol.
