The first three are really the only 'essential' ones. SH1 does feel kinda clunky compared to say, Resident Evil 2, but the other two generally control fine.

Of the western-developed games, the only one that seemed to really succeed was Shattered Memories, and that's mainly because (I think) they strayed as far as they could from a lot of the typical Silent Hill tropes. It's not a remake, I want to stress that over and over, Shattered Memories is not a remake of Silent Hill 1. It's a loose re-telling of the original game's story, but it's more like Castlevania IV compared to Castlevania I. It's a completely different game in every conceivable way.

Some of the other western-developed ones are decent and quite playable, they're just awfully generic feeling to me.

About the movie... absolutely hated it. Needlessly ruined crucial elements from the game and changed the tone big time. I have no idea why anyone would think it was a good adaption. It was successful to a certain degree but overall it pretty much completely screwed up the plot of the game. This may be due to the fact the game's plot was left open to the player's interpretation by having multiple endings and story branches.

As for the price comparison, the original PS2 games aren't expensive at all. I find little reason in buying the blatantly worse releases, at the same price.

haha I know. That's why I put the word 'remake' in quotes. :D

It's not a good adaptation, it's a good movie (or at least a decent one).

I don't necessarily think it's a good adaptation. But I do think it was an enjoyable film on its own. I've watched it like three or four times actually.

same here. The Pyramid Head scene at the church door is still so fucking awesome.

I think it's actually a pretty nice adaptation up until they start going on about witches. The exact point where the movie goes downhill to me is when they go into the church.

I always got this feeling that the screenwriter either didn't play more than half of the game or simply couldn't make sense of any of it (or figured the audience wouldn't be able to make sense of it) so he made up some stuff.

I've seen far, far worse movies though. Both considering it as an adaptation and considering it as a horror film, there's far worse examples of the genre and I think it's at least somewhat successful at what it tries to do.

Fair enough, but... the screwing with the plot was just not cool with me. I've met more than one person that thought it was a great movie that didn't even know it was a video game adaption when it came out, but, being that I have the games so ingrained in my head I just friggin hated it. Not to say it's as terrible as stupid stuff like the Doom movie or something.

yeah, you really have to divorce the film from the games to get maximum enjoyment from it, sort of like you have to divorce most films from the books/plays/TV shows/etc. that they might be based on. This same logic has allowed me to enjoy the RE films on a certain level, though none of them are as good as Silent Hill.

to elaborate, bruno...

I think of Silent Hill not so much as a specific story -- but rather a specific dreadful place. It reminds me of Lovecraft's Shadow Over Innsmouth. He had a specific story, and yet it's been retold and reshaped many times (Dagon, Dead & Buried, etc.) You can't say that these are better or worse stories, as they're not adaptations... they're elaborations on this evil place. (Does that make sense?)
