That's hilarious. So I guess it's official the collection completely sucks.
What do you guys think of the series anyways? How they measure up to other games, favorite game in the series, etc... always see some deep talk about them around places sometimes lol. It seems SH2 is the most popular, but I've seen some claim SH3 was probably the freakiest or something. I'd like to play them all through someday.
I can't play SH5 though on the 360. It's apparently too hard for Konami to patch the game so INVERTED actually works, yeah. You can't invert the controls.

SH2 is definitely the highlight of the series.
A lot of 3 is pretty much doing the 'look' of 1 with Ps2 era technology, and then taking it way into overdrive. It's pretty psychotic. Truthfully, I love all 3 games in the original 'trilogy' more or less equally.
Everything after 4 was outsourced to western devs, who despite trying really hard, never could capture the 'feel' of the other games.
The movie was... I don't know. If you stop it around the halfway point, it actually feels like a pretty well done adaptation of the first game. Then they start throwing in stupid shit about witch burning and it just gets silly. I'd consider watching the sequel if they learn from their mistakes with the first.

I'm not super familiar with the series. I've played quite a bit of the first game in the past, but not much else. But I'm always intrigued by the series. And I actually enjoyed the film quite a bit. At any rate, I'll probably still buy the HD collection. I think it will plummet in price soon. Probably cheaper than finding both PS2 games at good price anyway. And I won't be comparing them to anything else.

Grossly underrated film and probably the best video game based film ever.noiseredux wrote:I'I actually enjoyed the film quite a bit.

it's up there. Yes. Funny, I only watched it because of Roger Avary, not because it was based on the games. But I thought it was really impressive.dsheinem wrote:Grossly underrated film and probably the best video game based film ever.noiseredux wrote:I'I actually enjoyed the film quite a bit.

The ps2 games go for ~$20 each give or take. If you're willing to hunt locally, you can get them for a lot cheaper than that even.
Sure the HD collection will probably tank in price before long thanks to all this (unless Konami goes and puts out the biggest patch in history or something, which I really can't see happening), but still. It won't cost much different to just get the ps2 games, and you'll get a superior experience.
Being such a huge horror fan in general Noise I always figured games like this would be right up your alley?

Despite the fact that I really wasn't too thrilled with it... I'd have to agree at least that it's easily one of the better video game adaptations out there.dsheinem wrote:Grossly underrated film and probably the best video game based film ever.noiseredux wrote:I'I actually enjoyed the film quite a bit.

Re: Silent Hill HD Collection Thread
yeah totally. It's weird, I think I always plan to get into them, if that makes sense. I've spent so much time reading about all the games in the series and thinking "someday I'll play them all." Y'know? I really think I'd love the series, right down to the goofy UFO endings. I guess I just need to find the time.AppleQueso wrote: Being such a huge horror fan in general Noise I always figured games like this would be right up your alley?
Re: Silent Hill HD Collection Thread
Gotta be honest I didn't care for the movie, and it doesn't exactly sound like being a fan of the games would boost that for better or worse. Was just kind of whatever to me.
I love the old RE's and clones... but I have to be honest, I have played a bit of the original but it definitely seems insanely clunky and dated, moreso than RE1 and whatnot. lol, I'll have to force myself to really play it one of thesedays. I went backwards with RE though, so maybe I can do that again with the SH series and it'll somehow turn out fine? The first three are the ones I'm most interested in.

Silent Hill is the peak of the survival horror genre and it's likely nothing will ever surpass it.Xeogred wrote:What do you guys think of the series anyways?
Silent Hill - Amazing. Must play for any survival horror fan. As a child it seriously disturbed me. Clunky combat but that's a given with most survival horror games. The environment, the setting, the plot, the characters... just such a classic game in every way. I can't recommend it enough.
Silent Hill 2 - Not often that a sequel is able to improve so vastly upon it's already legendary predecessor so much. SH 2 is one of those games that just goes beyond "video-game-dom" and telling a truly compelling and deep story. It's honestly a required play-through for gamers interested in the genre. As a teenager it definitely freaked me out. Just psychological, it hits upon some very serious stuff, let alone being creepy and suspenseful as fuck. Lots of replay value too, like RE 2.
Silent Hill 3 - I'm not big on this one but it's still good. Has a lot of the "freaky" scares you mentioned, but it felt kind of cheap in that department... like a mix between genuine Silent Hill disturbing environment scare and shock Resident Evil scares. I didn't like how it kind of cheapened the plot of the original SH but I can't go into details there without doing spoilers. Overall an acceptable end to the original trilogy and a good game. Worth a go.
Silent Hill 4 - I have little opinion on this one. The premise itself is awesome, the trailers looked great, but once I got the game in my hands I just had zero interest. Didn't play it for more than a few hours, and if it's not apparent already I am a huge Silent Hill fan. The combat just really felt off, the story failed to pull me in, and the atmosphere was absolutely nothing compared to the first two games.
Silent Hill Origins - Some mixed opinions here. It's essentially a fan-game. Possibly a good one. It does very well when trying to pull the gameplay elements form the original SH games, but, story-wise it's very weak. Feels like a cheap imitation overall but I still thought it was well made. Playing on PSP with headphones was a good time (very good audio) but it just didn't pull me in.
Homecoming - Absolutely hated it. Was hard to even stomach the first few hours. Nothing else to say.

Re: Silent Hill HD Collection Thread
yeah I liked SH a lot back in the day -- playing at a friend's house. Last year I tried to play again and couldn't get sucked in. I hate to say, but I wonder if I'd almost prefer the "remake" now... but more than anything I'm interested in playing 2.Xeogred wrote:I have played a bit of the original but it definitely seems insanely clunky and dated, moreso than RE1 and whatnot.
