If you don't like it fine but I thought it was fantastic also please don't reply unless you have played entire game cause you cant really judge it if you have not.

Silent Hill 4 has a lot of really cool and unique ideas. Too bad they aren't executed as well as I'd like.

I hated how the second half of the game is nothing but an escort mission back through all the areas you've been to in reverse.

It wasnt scary as the game was too well lit and music and sound effects were really lame compared to the first 3, esp the first 2 games. No flashlight or radio alarm killed the mood. Monster design was great although not particularly symbolic, creepiest monsters design in the series in my opinion.
Idiotic item system made the series take a step back into the old Resident Evil-style of having item boxes which was pointless. The second half of the game was one giant, annoying, buggy escort quest and you had to visit the same areas twice which was a bummer and lazy game design. And the main character was really dull, although you could say that Walter was the actual main character of that game.
I do like the idea of hauntings and gradual horror or what ever you want to call it. Every time you return back to your appartment you realize that something has changed since you were gone and it becomes more intense step by step... It works better in a horror book than in a horror game though. And in practice the haunting system wasnt handled that well as you had to carry a sword and candles with you. Oh and combat buttons were revampped for no apparent reason on number 4. Its like Mario changing the Jump and Run buttons in the next 2D mario game just for the heck of it.

Most of the original members who made Silent Hill 1-3 had already left by Silent Hill 4 as far as I know, which why its the last decent Silent Hill game. But those problems I stated are the reason why many Silent Hill fans only play through number 4 just once. I did like the storyline of Silent Hill 4, and most importantly it felt like a Silent Hill game, but gameplay was just too broken for me to enjoy the actual game.

I kinda liked the main character of 4. He just kinda lazily wandered through the game like he wasn't sure if everything was actually happening or not.

Its not just the personality, its the fact he as a character didnt have much to do with the games storyline unlike in the earlier games. Although I guess you could say that Harry Mason had kinda the same thing as Henry, Alessa Gillespies presence being the reason behind all the supernatural things happening to him, while in Silent Hill 2 and 3 those things were directly caused by the main character in one way or another.
Its been quite some time since the last time I played Silent Hill and I have been up for more than 24 hours so maybe my memory doesnt serve me that well at the moment :) I always had trouble following up the whole Cheryl/Alessa/why are these things happening-reasoning in the first game even though its my favorite SH game.

SH1 is really confusing plot-wise. They explain almost nothing to you and it really doesn't make a lot of sense until you play 3 (and even then it's still pretty confusing). Doesn't help at all that Dahlia flat out lies to you repeatedly in the game (all that crap about Samael, etc) and you never know it.

I really want to go back and play 4. At first I just really didn't like it at all, but being a completionist wanting more SH, The Room and Shattered Memories seem like my only options.

Too different from the Team Silent games. It's commonly know that 4 began as an unrelated game.
If each mistake being made is a new one, then progress is being made.
