Why would someone get CIB if they have no plans on selling?

Sealed collectors collect sealed games for the same reason any other sealed collector collects sealed anything.

And up until this thread I thought CIB stood for "Cartridge/CD, Instructions, Box".

To simply collect it? Pure novelty? To preserve it? Does it really matter?harper wrote:Which is?AppleQueso wrote:Sealed collectors collect sealed games for the same reason any other sealed collector collects sealed anything.

You don't understand collecting, and you may be trolling. It's OK- I don't understand the appeal of most country music. But it exists and I accept that.harper wrote:Which is?AppleQueso wrote:Sealed collectors collect sealed games for the same reason any other sealed collector collects sealed anything.
It still does, IMHO.Luke wrote:And up until this thread I thought CIB stood for "Cartridge/CD, Instructions, Box".

I'm not trolling, and I'm not saying I don't accept it. I'd genuinely like to understand the appeal of owning something you can't use.k.vlaros wrote:You don't understand collecting, and you may be trolling. Ah, forget it. If I'm being accused of trolling then I guess I just need to shut up. But am I not allowed to speak my mind and ask for the opinions of others that I don't agree with so I can better understand their point of view?

I believe you. I think the appeal is at least two fold for me. One is scratching the compulsion to maintain a microcosm of order (picture a less creepy version of the guy with a disaster-zone house but a perfectly cleaned, ordered, cataloged and presented baseball card collection), and that may just be a personality quirk/defect some have and some don't. A second aspect is the satisfaction/smugness of owning something relatively rare. The appeal of exclusivity should be more generally understood than the OCD bit.harper wrote:I'm not trolling, and I'm not saying I don't accept it. It does or at least it should. If they need something for a sealed game why not use NIB (new in box/case).Luke wrote:And up until this thread I thought CIB stood for "Cartridge/CD, Instructions, Box".

Well I don't want to sound like an idiot, but when I show off my collection I'll mention "That one is CIB" and when asked what CIB means I'll reply with "Cartridge/Instructions/Box" but I have "CIB" games that aren't really "complete".jmbarnes101 wrote:It does or at least it should. My TMNT II Arcade Game (NES) doesn't include the pizza coupon (used it the day I/my Father bought it). If the C = Complete, I would never want to label the game as CIB although I have the cart/instructions/box.
Obviously I'm new to the video game seller's market.

Uh, because I could sell it for 10x the amount I paid and get a bunch more games?harper wrote:But would that not give you all the more reason to open it? Especially if it were only a few dollars to begin with. I'd do it in a heart beat. Screw selling it. That doesn't compare to being the first to open a fresh new game after however many years.Cronozilla wrote:If it were something ludicrously valuable, I probably wouldn't though.
Maybe I'm just weird.
I'm not going to personally buy a sealed copy of a game that's very expensive, but if I came across one for very little and it turned out to be worth quite a bit, I'd consider selling it. Unless it's on of my favorite games ever, I'm not going to really be concerned with showing off any sort of sealed copy.
It wouldn't be an entirely bad idea to make my game collecting self sufficient financially.
