Genesis and Mega CD with a region cart

Post by Menegrothx »

So I bought myself a Genesis model 2 and a US 32X, is it possible for me to use my PAL Mega CD model 2 with the US Genesis and 32X with this http://products.genny4ever.net/megacart_v1x.html and play US Sega CD and 32X Sega CD games on it? Or am I better off with buying a real Sega CD? How reliable are those things, any one here know?
It would be more convenient to use the Mega CD I already own and apparently that thing also works as a back up memory. Its also the cheaper alternative.
The site states *: Some discs require a region/frequency mod, and they havent tested it on US Genesis with PAL Mega CD so it sounds a little risky... Im not intrested in Japanese titles though if its something kanji-related.

There is also this http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/console/sega/megacd.htm . But like I stated in my other thread, I dont know anything about console modding so I would need to pay for some professional to do it. I guess it would be about as expensive as buying the region cart, if not more.

I know It would be a lot easier for me to just play the games on an emulator or through burned copies, but I want to own physical copies of certain games. And its easier to have the 32X and Mega CD attached to the same Genesis, rather than switching controller and AC adaptors between the Mega Drive and Genesis all the time.

I'm not sure. I believe it should work. Likely as reliable as a normal cartridge.

The arguable main downside is you're not able to play 32X or 32X CD games that require 50hz mode. 32X runs a video mode check of some kind.

But US 32X has a larger cheaper library than PAL anyway. Some games like Primal Rage and T-Mek even contain identical ROM data worldwide (think Sonic 2 or Sonic & Knuckles), don't be fooled by their PAL price markup if you're just playing.

For plain CD games needing 50hz, you could attach the Mega CD back to Mega Drive as before.

I dont mind buying my games from America since Sega CD and 32X games are cheaper in America, often even after importing and possible import taxes, thats the reason why I bought an American 32X in the first place. And there are quite a lot of US exclusives. So my idea would be to use my Mega Drive for regular MD/Genesis games and the Genesis/Mega CD/32X-combo for American 32X, Sega CD and 32X Sega CD games only. I wouldnt buy any European Mega CD or 32X games and all the plain 16-bit games I would play on the Mega Drive.

You mean that I can play US Sega CD games on my Mega CD attached to the Genesis if I use a region cart, but I have to attach my Mega CD back to my Mega Drive every time I want to play European Sega CD games? Thats no problem, as I intend to collect an US/NTSC-only Sega CD collection.

Not always. Only for games that actually block or have problems with 60hz.
