I'd say that's far more juvenile than weird.

Uhh, Conkers. C'mon, there's a giant singing shit, zombies, busty sunflowers, cavepeoples, and so much more.

Seriously though, there's a singing shit. That's pretty damned awesome.

I have no idea how popular Jordan and Shaq are in japan, they were just some examples of easily recognizable american celebrities. I know Japan has product placement but it will not be the same as ours, again look at your Adventure Island reference. Think of also all the manga and anime inspired games that made it here in the 80's and early 90's but we were not exposed to the root sources, there are a lot more weird not knowing the source material. I think TMNT is considered for the most part pretty normal in the US but other countries only exposed to the games I can see them finding them pretty weird.
Yeah, I wasn't really trying to argue your point. You are right for the most part. I was just pointing out something about Japan, but really... it is a VERY minor thing in this thread overall.

FYI, TMNT is one of the few non-Japanese animations that actually did fairly well in Japan. :P

The groups were different but the binding of Isaac was made mostly by members of Team Meat. Including the Lead Designer.

OMG yes, I did play that! Ages ago. I can't even remember which version it was... either C64 or DOS. Wow. Forgot all about that one.
