new consoles

Post by D.D.D. »

So we're about 2 years into the current generation and it already feels like the new consoles are creeping up on us... What are some things y'all are expecting to happen on the next consoles (or hoping will be on them, or out right think is a long shot)?

I believe that the PS3 will catch up to the 360 in sales, if not out right pass it and I believe people will start to see the mediocrity of the Wii.

As blu-ray catches on the PS3 will begin to dominate home theater, and the PS network, if free, will provide casual games to a wider audience. The nintendo wii will continue to be very successful, but I feel that nintendo will assume a software development role only in the coming months.

My prediction: The world of video game will end in a whimper, not a bang.

All of the existing Dreamcasts, in all dimensions of existence, will grow mechanical legs and begin takeover of the entire universe.

i still dont see why everyone hates the wii so much. its just like the gamecube was except people are actually buying it and the crappy 3rd party titles. where with the gamecube it's strongest titles were nintendo's first party titles.. the same exact thing goes for the wii, everyone just hates it because its popular. and while i will admit i think that a lot of people that shouldnt be buying it are, thats just the way it is.

i personally find the games on wii refreshing in a world of first person shooters and crime emulators..

but anyway its probably going to keep going the way it is currently.. with the wii selling well, except i think ps3 will probably start selling better, especially if they do a price cut. i'm considering one but i'm not enough of a baller to drop 400-500 dollars on a new console, especially when i'll probably end up playing my snes more than it anyway.

Wow I think the topic shot over what the OP was originally asking.

I think he's talking about the generation following the current one (PS3, 360, Wii). Though personally I don't see why I'd even start thinking about that generation... the PS3 has hardly released anything yet, the Wii still is shy in its catologue as well, and the 360 only has the numbers... but certainly not the quality.

Really from what I can tell this generation lacks quality titles all around! I've still yet to be "wow'd" by anything. I've enjoyed, but not wow'd. And I'm still not convinced by these remarks that the PS3 will bust through the doors any day now... it hasn't yet, and I don't see it happening soon. I mean come on, it's been out for over a year and still hardly a fizzle let alone an explosion. If I bought a PS3 on release date for the asking price, I'd be one pissed off individual today with my copy of GTA4 and MGS4... a year and all I got were two good titles, both of which only came out last freakin' month!?

We've entered a market where gaming consoles are a bit more then in house arcades in the home. They are interactive media devices, a market which actually started ages ago, but wasn't done right until now. But this puts game down a notch really... the games are now this side of commercial giants and require tons of work and money to make. No longer is it 3 guys and an IBM in a closet sized office. It's powerhouses where the level design office is 20 people deep, let alone the programmers, writers, modelers, musicians, etc. Game makers have to spread their market wide now a days in hopes to make a buck... they can't just make something on one console and hope to rake in the flow... their game flops and it could be their asses on the line.

So this makes me look to the future (the place this topic was attempting to look at) and wonder.

Where are our consoles going? What are they doing? How much more power do the expect to muster out of these machines?

And I'll tell you where I see it going. It's something tried several times, but failed, we weren't ready. But we are now. With the onset and large success of stuff offered by XBOX Live MarketPlace, Virtual Console and the likes... tack on the amazing success of flash games on the internet, and the large wealth of money being made off of "pick up and play" titles and user friendly games on the DS, us hardcore gamers are going to see fewer and fewer games catered to us.

I mean look at it, what do we see coming our way? Another sequel to the few hardcore games, that are more softcore glam then hardcore gaming. What do we have now a days? Another Final Fantasy and Grand Theft Auto? They sell big! Really big... but they take for ever to make and huge production costs. Consider "Fallout 3" which has been in the making for YEARS. I heard about this game so long ago from my uncle who's son works at Bethesda, I could swear I didn't even have pubic hair at the time. This massive projects aren't going to support the video game market at all.

In comes the home entertainment/media device. It's basically our online consoles as they are now beefed up even more. With online distribution of lower budget, but not cheap ass games. The production costs are minimal, no need to drive down to the store to buy them, and great copyright protection. I meet people already with XBOX 360's who own maybe 2 or 3 games, but their Arcade Collection is through the f'ing roof! Videogames are entering mainstream finally, and sorry to tell you hardcore gamers, you probably aren't going to like it. But your the minority now, and they want their money.

Oh and Blu-Ray is a joke. Really, it is. The market is not ready to have to replace their entire library of movies yet again. Just look on these forums alone and see how many people still hook their consoles up via composite or RF... you think these people are gonna notice the difference from DVD to Blu-Ray?

Bethesda didn't even have the rights to Fallout 3 until 2004, and didn't start working on it until after Oblivion shipped.

That said, a lot of your post reads like some serious 'good old days' syndrome.
