He's most certainly right in the "frivolous" part if I understand the meaning of the word correctly.
I strongly disagree about playing games:
a) being a waste of time.
b) not giving you anything for the time put in.

Your friend is probably one of those jackanapes who can't get past the first level of Space Invaders. In short, he's just jealous so he lashes out at something he can never hope to understand because he's such a tool.

Quite frankly, your friend sounds like a douchebag to me. What exactly does he do with his hobbies that aren't frivolous?
Don't that just look oh so tasty?

to me frivolous spending is buying something when you don't even have money for:
- food
- shelter (including utilities like electricity & water)
- health care
- savings for retirement
- the above for people that depend on you for survival (wife/kids/parents)

but that's not what it means, and I assume the person the OP is referring to meant what it means: "lacking any seriousness".
It isn't spending when you don't have your necessities, it's spending on something that you don't have any serious necessity for. And as someone stated, what do we spend our money on other then food and shelter that really is "serious"? So the statement the OP's friend said really is moot.
