Yeah, the "Ah Sweet!" feeling dies quickly when you do it like that. I mean you literally hit the button, go make a sandwich, eat it, hit the can, wash the hands, and the damn animation is still going! So you managed to find a way to effectively use a huge summon 20 times per rounds...The cost: waiting absurdly long for it to end. It was too bad you couldn't skip all that back in the day. Y'know, hit X or something and have it skip the pain and go straight to the damage?
VIII had shorted cast times if you didn't want to use boost, but hell, even FFX had unskippable cutscenes (like the one before Seymore on Mt. Gagazat).

Those summons in FF 7 were pretty mind blowing at the time, when the game was actually one of the best looking games on the market. It sucks to have to sit and watch them now though, but I never tired of them back then. Course, this was back when everything Japanese still seemed so amazing to me, and not silly, over the top and melodramatic the way they do now. I actually hated all the summon animations in FF 13 and tried to never use the summons in that game unless I had to. I actually thought the actual character attacks were cooler and more fun to watch, just seeing all the fun ways you could coordinate your team's offense together. The summons just seemed so stupid in comparison.

It's funny how time changes your perception of things

You mean you don't like Hecatoncheir's final attack?
