Wikipedia calls it an RTS RPG Shooter.
Wikipedia says a lot of things.

Thats like 3 genres lol, sad part is that STILL doesn't fully describe it  You just have to play it. It is its own genre

Is it more unique than Ecco the Dolphin and Megaman Battle Network?

Knights in the Nightmare to me is kind of a strategy rpg mashed up with bullet hell shooters. It's fun. I grabbed it a long time ago on the DS, then later on the PSP. I have yet to beat it though.

Yes! Honestly its like nothing you've ever played...Its a combo of Valkyrie Profile, FFtactics, with RTS, SRPG, Bullet Hell, and Sim gameplay. You can get a TON of characters perhaps more than say Suikoden. There are also multiple endings and a BUNCH of weapons.

If ever there was a game that needed a demo, it's this one. Watching a few YouTube videos could probably give you a good idea of how the game works overall, but in practice it is IMO pretty exciting and challenging. Also, it really does control well with the PSP nub.. it's very different that with a stylus, but I was surprised how well it worked.. and the PSP screen really shows off how pretty it is.

Dangit, now I want to go dig it up and play it hehe.

EDIT: And the DS version is great too, I have both versions. :)

I can't grasp how you would pla Catan against an AI. Or Diplomacy, for that matter.
I can see Catan being an entertaining exercise if the AI was decent, especially for people who are relatively new to the board game and have that "fresh addict" phase. It shouldn't be that difficult for a computer to evaluate different options/trades based on a set of priorities for each AI-controlled player. Plus the game would only take a few minutes against the computer. Apparently the AI sucks here though, so hopefully people will forget I mentioned it.

Diplomacy AI: now that's another matter. I have a hard time believing that you could really make a good AI that isn't quite random. Take the psychology out of this game and there's not much left (that I would want to play).

I tried the game but just couldn't come to grips with it and ended up moving on to other (more familiar) stuff.
