One of my biggest pet peeves as a completionist is to come back to an area that I've been to before, only to find that a time-sensitive quest is no longer available. Those of you who are familiar with Ice-Pick Lodge's 2005 release Pathologic may know exactly why I was unable to complete this game... First of all, there's 3 different characters, each with unique dialogue and their own narrative and story. You have 12 days of in-game time, and that's it. If you miss something on a particular day? Too fucking bad, it's passed. This isn't Majora's Mask. Characters may die before you get to them, and further characters may die as a result of your previous failure. Maddening. Couple this with the fact that I hate using walkthroughs and... I'm sure you can see my frustration.
So right now I'm playing through FFVII. Without any spoilers, any hints on what I should be looking out for?
(as a side note, I really wish games actually rewarded you for completion these days. Spyro 2 had Dragon Shores, Kingdom Hearts had that KH2 trailer, God of War had all that dev content... Now you just get a shitty, worthless, imaginary trophy.)

Re: "Blink and you'll miss it"
One thing that I do NOT recommend doing in the game is going through the trouble of getting the Knights of the Round materia. Sure, it's totally worth it, but it is so overpowered that it breaks the game into little tiny bits. The last boss battles can literally be defeated in one hit with it; it's more sad than amusing, really.
Re: "Blink and you'll miss it"
You're probably going to miss some stuff in FFVII, lol. There's tons of materia hidden throughout the whole game off and on. Not sure what else to say, just keep your eyes on the look out and always talk to everyone, etc.
Chocobo mating for the gold Chocobo to KOTR is definitely a chore and takes a few hours to do. Worth if you want to be a completionist, that or you could just fight Emerald and Ruby Weapon without it for a real challenge (much harder than the final boss if you're going against them without KOTR), and then just get awarded a gold chocobo that way.

You CANNOT play a Final Fantasy game without a guide if you don't want to miss anything. Fact. Square doesn't design these games in any kind of logical way. Essentially, they design these games FOR guides. I'm convinced that they do it intentionally, otherwise their designers are just insane.
Also, Knights of the Round is awesome! I wouldn't tell anyone NOT to get it. However, if you want to keep the game challenging, just don't finish the Chocobo sidequest that eventually gets you Knights of the Round
Omnislash is every bit as awesome and overpowered. You get that for completing the battle arena. Normally, you're only supposed to see it when you beat the game, but you can get it early from the arena. If you want to take down the hidden bosses(a.k.a. the Weapons), you will want those as well as Master Materia and I think there was something that gives you a double cast ability.
If you're playing FF7 without a guide, you WILL miss something. Guaranteed, and that's coming from another perfectionist/completionist, so I know.

Re: "Blink and you'll miss it"
and Knights of the Round DOESN'T break the game, that's why they put optional bosses in the game. Every Final Fantasy fan knows that the final bosses are never the game's REAL challenge.

I'm pretty sure KOTR still kills any single boss in the game in maybe two casts max. It is completely cheap dude, lol.

It's only 130k damage if your stats are high enough to hit the damage limit on each hit. The bonus bosses have far more HP than that.Xeogred wrote:I'm pretty sure KOTR still kills any single boss in the game in maybe two casts max. It is completely cheap dude, lol.

Pair this with doublecast (w-summon I think) and mime, and you've got yourself a broken game. If I recall, quadra magic doesn't work with KOTR.MrPopo wrote:It's only 130k damage if your stats are high enough to hit the damage limit on each hit. The bonus bosses have far more HP than that.

Considering how much work it takes to even get Knights of the Round, I don't think it makes sense to complain about it making the final bosses easy. I mean, if the player has earned it, then they deserve to own the final bosses. That's the dual purpose of stuff like that. It rewards you for earning it by letting you own the last bosses, but also encourages you to seek out a new challenge, like the Weapon bosses. Knights gives you a fighting chance against them, and I remember it taking a LOT of Knights summons for the desert Weapon boss, and he still wiped out my party and nearly killed Cloud before I killed him with my last summon before he would have offed me.

If a player has acquired Knights, doublecast and mime, then that player WANTS to break the game. I say, more power to him. It's not like you're forced to go through the effort of getting all of that. Knights takes quite a lot of patience to acquire.brunoafh wrote:Pair this with doublecast (w-summon I think) and mime, and you've got yourself a broken game.
