Yeah, Tortoise is great, and they've been around the early-mid 90's. Along with Mogwai, they're one of the forefathers of the post-rock instrumental movement. And they are REALLY good live, also. They had two xylophones on stage, and the band members played "musical" chairs throughout most of the show, constantly switching instruments mid-song.

On a heavier note, check out Big Business on Relapse Records. They kick ass. I also enjoy the complex rhythms of Meshuggah - though it took some ear training to realize that in spite of all the madness, they generally maintain a 4/4 the entire way through. Their drummer trumps nearly every other drummer out there (all due respect to Neil Peart and Danny Carey, though). I like polyrhythms. :D

If post rock is your deal I'd check out the Samuel Jackson 5, saxon shore, the album leaf, Maserati, sigor ros (don't care if I cant spell it), tristeza, mono... hell, nowadays there are a bunch of good post rock bands.
Don't that just look oh so tasty?

I only got to see them once on the "Harmacy" tour with Rex and oddly enough Jon Davis of Folk Implosion. It was an awesome show. I feel people give "Harmacy" too much flack. I mean it definitely isn't their best but far from their worst. I got to see Archers of Loaf a bunch back when they were together. A great, great live band. And yes...I am a fan of Twilight Singers. "Powder Burns" is in constant rotation for me. Though their first album is kind of weak. It reminds of "1965" which is IMO The Afghan Whigs worst album.
Funny, I was really into Sebadoh in jr. high/high school too(I'm 27 now). I was really into "III" and the low-fi stuff, "Bubble and Scrape" is my favorite. I remember driving around the country in Nebraska and smoking ciggarettes and listening to alot of Sebadoh. I really liked Harmacy too, it's got some great tracks, it's just really "polished" and I think the low-fi fans were disapointed. Still a great band, just dropped of my top 5...still in my top 10 though! :D
I like Sebadoh a lot. That riff in "License to Confuse" still floors me. I have to admit to not really liking Eric Gaffney's songs though. I like noisy stuff but his songs are just grating to me.

I've seen them 3 times, they put on an awesome show. Their last tour was a small venue only tour and I was lucky enough to get tickets. I was about 5 feet way and they played for two and half hours.....it was one of the best shows I've seen. Mice Parade is awesome live too...Adam Pierce is amazing at pretty much every instument and his band had Doug Sharin from June of 44 and HIM(not the crap metal band, the amazing Jazz group) on drums and Dylan Cristie on vibes.....it was amazing.
In the past year I've seen some great live bands. Grizzly Bear sounded so good and put everyone into a trace. I was blown away. Do Make Say Think was really good too. If they ever play in your area they are a must see. Akron/Family was great too, really good dynamics between the band members. They are such crazy hippies its funny, but it's too bad their best song writer left the band. Another great live show was 31 Knots. They are probably the tightest and most entertaining 3 piece I've seen.

ott0bot- you are a fan of June of 44 and Him? You have stellar taste in music. June of 44 was a marvelous band as was Him. I never saw June of 44, which upsets me but I did see Him once and they were fantastic. In fact it was a festival at Princeton Universtity in the late 90s that in addition to having Him on the bill also featured Shellac, Uzeda, Don Caballero, Seam, US Maple, Paul Newman, Enemy Mine, Rye Coalition and Arab on Radar. One of the best shows I have ever been to.
