Best shmup for the Saturn hands down.
Shienryu was actually the first shmup I played on my Saturn and I was blown away.
Things only got better after playing other shmups.

Yup, the Saturn is one of my favourite systems. I think it's the bee's knees, dipped in honey.

This.
Darius Gaiden also has this abstract artistic value about it. Especially the music. Epic boss battles, and the best explosions ever.

Short answer to the OP's question: Yes, and in most cases, it gets even better. On a side note, get Fighters Megamix.

Alpha 2 is probably my favorite Saturn fighter but you should also check out the original Marvel and SF versus games. They blow psx away and it's inexpensive to import and use the action replay.

Thanks for the pointers, folks! Much appreciated. I've heard of and seen Battle Garegga and it's definately on my list, but yes - pricey!

Also on my list: Layer Section, Sengoku Blade, Thunderforce Gold pack 2, Sonic Wings Special.

I've got Darius Gaiden on Taito Legends 2 for the PS2 but am not finding it that playable to be honest. Maybe I just need more exposure to it. Shienryu I also have on PS2 - any point in duplicating the purchase on Saturn?

I honestly find Darius Gaiden really slow and plodding in extended play sessions. Good graphics, great music, utterly boring if you play more than 3 credits.
Uhh, don't play Daris Gaiden on Easy. It's most certainly not "slow" or "plodding." (Yes, I'm a wimp when it comes to shmups)

I still prefer Galactic Attack/Layer Section, and have been spending a lot more time with it.
