Online Services Shutdown on Some EA Games

I hardly play online, I knew of some games losing support. This is quite a few just from EA, I thought most current generation games were safe. Well maybe except annual released games such as certain Sports and FPS games.

The decisions to retire older EA games are never easy. The development teams and operational staff pour their hearts into these games almost as much as the customers playing them and it is hard to see one retired. But as games get replaced with newer titles, the number of players still enjoying the older games dwindles to a level -- fewer than 1% of all peak online players across all EA titles -- where it’s no longer feasible to continue the behind-the-scenes work involved with keeping these games up and running. We would rather our hard-working engineering and IT staff focus on keeping a positive experience for the other 99% of customers playing our more popular games. We hope you have gotten many hours of enjoyment out of the games and we appreciate your ongoing patronage.

January 18, 2012 -- Change in virtual currencies
On January 18, 2012, EA will switch users from game-specific virtual currencies to a common currency in four Play4Free games. Existing balances in the current currencies will be converted into the new common currency - called “Play4Free Funds” - without loss for the customer. Affected games and currencies are:
Lord of Ultima - diamonds
Battlefield Heroes - battlefunds
Battlefield Play4Free - battlefunds
From January 18, 2012 all games will use Play4Free Funds as the virtual currency. More information will be posted on the respective games' websites closer to the time of change.

Wow thats terrible to see the Midnight Pass taken down.I remember the day that Saboteur came out and was very excited about the Midnight Pass (Im adult and like adult things).Fortunately the game was/is one of the best games for the systems.I love how you cant sue over false advertising and all the new rules that come out after the fact of limited content without us knowing (at the time).

Go ahead shut the servers and lose your hardcore fan base and then wonder what con you have to come up with next to sucker more people in.

And yet Epic Games still maintains, monitors, and keeps their master server (s) up and running for the more than 10 year old Unreal Tournament series. I know because I speak to their community manager when there's an issue with them and they just did a major cleanup to them a few months ago.

People play your old games, EA. You've done enough to alienate your consumer base. Don't dig yourself deeper into the ground.

Looks like I need to download any Boom Blox Bash Party levels I want in the next couple weeks. It seems like EA could just scale down the percentage of servers in proportion to how popular each game is, rather than shutting them down completely.
