It's not necessary per-say, though it is more convenient.
I personally don’t like using burned CD/DVD’s with my systems since if there burned wrong and not on the best CDR’s possible they will generally wear out your drive faster.

I got the flip top case on and it took a long time anyways my new dilemma is that the ps2 while it reads disks takes forever to try and load them then i get a disk read error, i think its because the disk tray is too high because my game popped up when i opened up the lid, anyone have any ideas how to fix this or how it happened. Thanks.

The game should not pop up. Did you confirm the model numbers by checking the Menu version thru Google? The custom cover might not be the right one. If you removed the tray and drive reader assembly, maybe not seated all the way?

Check the alignment of the entire top cover, make sure everything is flush. The flip top should snap lightly shut. The PS2 won't read a disc if the height is off even a little, so you are almost there. PS2 Blue CDs are harder to read vs DVD games if the reader is marginal. Maybe clean the eye with a soft brush?

I remember searching it up and finding no results also the case seems snug although it is off by a tiny bit (By a tiny bit i mean probably half a centimeter or something) yeah ill check it and see if i can figure it out. Also i have 8 screws on the bottom.

Got it working, it turned out i left a metal piece with tape in the back of the original case and i put it back on the new case and it works, abeit with loud noises and it sounds like my discs are getting eaten.

Now onto new problems, i want to set up a connection between my PS2 and my pc using an ethernet cable because i want to send my backups to my HDD, my ps2 is softmodded and after reading tutorials on how to get hdl dum(p/b) working it looks like i need to use CDGENPS2 and i don't have any CDRs lying around so i was wondering if theres a way to get the connection going by using ulaunch or something

Please and thanks!

Congrats on getting it working! For Ethernet transfer read the PS2 Hard Drive Guide (Second Reply) at my signature link.
