How much do you pay for retro games
Re: How much do you pay for retro games
Up until recently I've not spent more than £15 on an old game, but now that my collection has reached a respectable 300 games I've started to edge that up to about £30.
It was weird at first spending so much, but then it dawned on me that I would happily spend that much on a new game that will likely never be worth what I paid for it. Whereas an old game is likely to be worth about the same for years. Not that I ever sell anything that isnt a duplicate anyway.

I think my average limit is $30. Perhaps a bit more if it's something I really, really want to play, but $30 is pretty much my cut off point and even then, it better be in damn fine shape.

It's really a damn shame you live in Spain, cause this popped up yesterday and I immediately thought of you.General_Norris wrote:Right now, I would gadly pay 300€ for a working OutRun cabinet.

I agree with this. Although I do buy some games to look at and in many cases will never play them. For the most part if it's something that will either hold its value at the price i'm paying OR i'm going to play the hell out of it, then the price itself isn't terribly important. With the exception of new stuff - just about everything else your renting, in essence.dunpeal2064 wrote:I'd easily drop $200 on a single retro game if I knew I would enjoy it enough to make it worth that money.
I've spent over $100 on so many games I can't keep count. Its a damn expensive hobby, you can either have a lot of cheap stuff, or a few really nice things... or be rich and have everything.
Of course, check the price. Make sure the game holds value. I may spend over $100 on a lot of games, but I trade/sell those games for over $100, as that is what they are worth.
Putting your money into games that will decrease in value, or overpaying for games out of impatience, will end up losing you money.
Oh... and I don't buy games that sit on the shelf anymore, seemed a total waste. If I want to look at a physical copy of a game, but not play it, I'll just look online. Thats just me though
Re: How much do you pay for retro games
Yes and yes. I'll shell out whatever it takes to get something I want as long as I know I'm going to enjoy it. That's the catch though. If anything is iffy or I'm on the fence about something I pass on it.mjmjr25 wrote:I agree with this. Although I do buy some games to look at and in many cases will never play them. not a lot. i usually just go and see what i can find, i usually limit myself to about $20 per trip. i have a hard time letting go of more than $10 on a single cart though unless its something i've been dying over

Re: How much do you pay for retro games
These days, I hardly ever pay more than $10 for any game. And almost never more than $20 for a new one. I have way more games than I actually play, so I don't really feel the need to buy expensive stuff I might not touch. I just buy cheap games and either save the rest of the money or buy DVDs (which I am guaranteed to use).
If I really want a game, though, $80 is the highest I'm willing to go.

I'll pay about any price I suppose, as long as I think the price is justified by the game's rarity.
I'm not going to buy Earthbound anytime soon.

Re: How much do you pay for retro games
$30 is about my limit. I have to really, REALLY want the game to pay more. Something like a new Metroid or Elder Scrolls game, but not much more. It's rare for me to go over $30 on a game purchase.
For a retro-console, probably around $70 is my cut-off point. And I've found all of my retro-consoles (ones I didn't buy during it's current generation) for $50 or under, except my TurboGrafx-16 which I paid $70 for and was happy with at that price (but later got broken

Re: How much do you pay for retro games
If I didn't already have it, I wouldn't buy it either. It's gone up in price to ridiculous levels now ($160 according to VGPC). 4 years ago (when I bought it), a smart shopper could get it for $70 shipped with no trouble. NOA really needs to put this up on the VC, or even better, release it for DS or 3DS, so that the average guy can afford to enjoy it.DinnerX wrote:I'll pay about any price I suppose, as long as I think the price is justified by the game's rarity.

Oh, and if we're going to mention how much we'd pay for a retro console: I'd say about $100 (and only if I want it badly). Any more than that and I start thinking about all the new stuff I could be buying instead. $60 is the most I'll pay under normal circumstances.

Re: How much do you pay for retro games
It's truly a shame, there are dozens of very nice OutRun cabs at a very low price running around. It's twice the shame because getting the OutRun guts is incredibly expensive compared to getting a whole cab, so buildig my own cab isn't much of a choice.Michi wrote:It's really a damn shame you live in Spain, cause this popped up yesterday and I immediately thought of you.

The Spanish version also uses a different board. Bleh!
But, at the end of the day, my parents won't allow me to put it in my room so I'm not going anywhere =/
