Yeah, I wouldn't pay over 50 for it. It's fun, but it's no Mother 3.

That's what I've been hearing people say. It looks like critics dismissed it at the time as a mediocre Pokemon clone, but what do they know?Godot102 wrote:^^Have fun with it! Its one of those games that is just plain fun!

They just looked at it and said: button masher....anime graphics, repetitive, bad voice acting, 5/10....When it deserves higher

One of those situations where the critics didn't see the value but it won over the public.Godot102 wrote:They just looked at it and said: button masher....anime graphics, repetitive, bad voice acting, 5/10....When it deserves higher

The public didn't care about it any more than the critics did at the time, if the sales numbers are anything to go by.Mechblue wrote:One of those situations where the critics didn't see the value but it won over the public.Godot102 wrote:They just looked at it and said: button masher....anime graphics, repetitive, bad voice acting, 5/10....When it deserves higher

The gamecube days were a much simpler time... back when we read reviews on paper and maybe even trusted them to be true.BoringSupreez wrote:The public didn't care about it any more than the critics did at the time, if the sales numbers are anything to go by.

Those are kind of valid points though.Godot102 wrote:They just looked at it and said: button masher....anime graphics, repetitive, bad voice acting, 5/10....When it deserves higher
Button masher: It's pretty much "dodge then attack then dodge" or "attack while dodging" depending on your weapon, and auto-lock-on means that you just need to button mash. The real skill comes in deciding where to button mash from and dodging enemy bullets/bombs/laser-tentacle-rape-things-that-turn-you-into-pathetic-borgs-temporarily.
Anime graphics: Not much to say here. Yup. Anime graphics. If you don't like that... you won't like this game's graphics. Not much more to say.
Repetitive: Could also be said of Super Mario Bros, any fighter without bonus stages, and any shump with lackluster bosses. Every stage is "beat all the enemies".
Bad voice acting: Oh dear God don't even get me started.
The gameplay shines through all of these, though.

Looking at the VGPC page, you can see the price make a huge upward spike in the last month and a half. I'd like to think we're a big part of the cause.
