SUper Mario Bros. movie....AAAARRGGH!

Post by Whatupdoc? »

So I know I'm behind in watching this movie but wow. The storyline was okay but mostly just bleh. My favorite was when the "goombas" had some serious goods when they were packin super scopes. So who else has input and yes I question why I watched it too. I just figured I'd share my experience of how I wasted an hour and a half of my life watching that movie.

Same here!

John Leguizamo, Bob Hoskins, and Dennis Hopper... who can beat that? It was fun children stuff. My parents hated it, today I think it is corny, but come on when you were 10 years old this was the SHIT! Or was I eleven? I know it was 4th grade cause I went with Izzy and Dave.

Here's a comment from IMDB:
It is clear that this film has been unfairly dismissed. OK, so it doesn't fit the criteria of a 'good film', but, it's a great kids film. It's dark and strange, things generally uncommon of kids films, and, if it wasn't for watching this film as a child, I wouldn't be into people like cronenberg, lynch and, in particular, Gilliam, whose sinister darkness I enjoy so greatly.

It is self-evident that there is a lack of imagination, especially recently, in the kids film genre, and this is where Super Mario Brothers earns the 7 out of 10 that I have given it. My film collection would be much less exciting without having watched this film as a child. This is why I urge those of you who have given it a poor rating to re-evaluate, considering what I have said.
I whole heartedly agree with him. The only exception is I was watching Lynch and Gilliam long before this movie. Who can say "Time Bandits" with me! WOOT!

Lynch is a freak though, my opinion of his stuff weighs between "what the hell" and "holy God you should be shot".

I agree with you in a way. A big part about great movies to me is how they hold up over time. To me it doesn't and I can barely watch it anymore. But there is a certain nostagia factor and the cast is pretty good. I'll remember it fondly if I don't watch it. I'll put Monster Squad and Short Circut in that category too.

definately cool with lynch and gilliam. An example of an amazing movie to me is The Adventures of Baron Munchausen(spelling?). It loved that movie as a kid. the charachters were awesome and it was so imaginative. It definately appeals to kids but has amazing adult themes and a dark enough sense of humor for adults to enjoy. It holds up today and it's still one of gilliams best movies!

Oh yeah the Baron Manchausen was awesome... did you know that movie bombed horribly (like nearly all of Gilliam's films)? I still own my VHS copy from when I was a tiny little squirt. It's been played so many times a good half of the movie is fuzzy and muted out.

Oh I would definitely never put "Super Mario Bros." in the list of great films. Not even good films. It's a B movie dud, but in the same respect it is a lot of fun! If I were to put in the "good film" category then I'd have to say "Ironman" was good. Which it wasn't, it was fun and entertaining!

The movie is terrible, but that is totally irrelevant.

Always have and always will love it

Weird isn't it considering most people who love films generally consider Gilliam visionary and genius. Well that just goes to show you how smart the general public are when it comes to genius. I love all of his movies except The Brothers Grim....which is only moderately enjoyable.
