This is a great question (that I cannot answer). I was in college at the time so 100% of our multiplayer was done in person. I didn't go online to play a console game until Madden on the PS2.

How well advertised was its online multiplayer? It came with that dial-up modem thingy, but I don't know how often it was mentioned in promotional stuff.

It was one of the main selling points. The box for the system is absolutely covered with info about the online and any game with even the slightest online component had that fact advertised big on the game case.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Like everyone said, SEGA really pushed their online with this, including Web browser discs and phone cords in the box. Games that support online multiplayer had the logo in the upper left of the case. Keyboard and mouse attachments for ease of use (and for playing FPS games the right way...and typing away zombies) SEGA really tried with this one. I remember browsing the internet on my DC with my crappy old TV since I didnt have a computer in my room, I also didnt have the keyboard or mouse at the time, so it was strictly controller navigation, but I loved every minute of it!

Funny how the DC, a console that's a good 14 years old in Japan, has a browser, yet the 360, which can be patched anytime, does not

Well to be fair, I think this was the case in North America. However, in Europe, hardly any games had online support (most games that supported in NA and Japan, had it removed in Europe for some reason). Plus don't forget we only got a 33k modem here too.

Funny though, back in 2000/2001 I was really jealous of the Americans having loads of online support, and was really annoyed my parents wouldn't let me get online with my Dreamcast, but now I have my own place, the wonders of Broadband, a PS3 and yet I can't be arsed...

I've been a member of the SCHTSERV PSO server for some years now, and although there are a few people playing on DC and gamecube, at this point it's entirely not worth it. When I say few, I mean few. Most everyone has jumped to the PSOBB client for PC, and it's not hard to see why, what with the Team system, and an entirely new Episode.
