I don't play Warhammer, but I've heard oodles about it from D&D/RPG loving friends and understand that it's something certain demographics of people spend lots of money and time to play. I don't play it, but for my own personal reasons (lucrative ones namely) I figured for $3 at Goodwill I couldn't go wrong.

Can anyone HELP ME assess exactly what all this stuff is? I don't know much about Warhammer 40k, except that complete, unpainted armies go for around $40-$60 on eBay. What is this particular set called? What are the buzzwords a fan would know? Or do you know of another online community where I should be asking instead?
Help - Found Warhammer 40k stuff

Its epic 40,000. It was a game set in the warhamer 40k universe but the models were smaller so you could have larger battles.
That looks like the starter set from the mid 90s. It might be worth somthing to a collector but the rules have been updated since then and the new epic rule book is avilable for free online.
edit heres the wikipedia page

It's a board game, release in 1997. It's stand alone, doesn't really tie into the rest of the universe. Here's an eBay auction for it...:

Not sure of its rarity, but other than collectors, I doubt many people are gonna be interested. Board Game Geek as a little bit on it here:

I don't think I could give you much else on it.

Ah the epic starter - a great bit of fun there. Id wager it is all there by the looks of those sprucetrees. The Warhammer fans are fickle, so whenever it is worth anything I would sell it. The fans of the lesser known or retired stuff (ie BloodBowl, Manowar, SpaceHulk, Warhammer Quest, etc) are less fickle, but thats really since the components are either for sale or not - if that did not make sense I apologize.
My estimation is that you should be able to get thirtyish for it.

Well, from the looks of things so far it seems like I'll be making a profit no matter what. Thanks everyone for sharing your knowledge.
Though, is there no conceivable way all these little figurines can't be used with modern Warhammer pieces? What prevents them from fitting into the contemporary rules? (eg. being cross-compatible.) This is just my arbitrary curiosity.
Oh yeah, and one more thing, how is someone supposed to PAINT these half-centimeter pieces of plastic!? I think I'd make my retinas explode if I tried!

There is nothing stopping you from using these models in any other warhammer/ GW games tbh. (Albeit it would look a bit ridiculous playing LOTR with this set). Thats the one thing that bugged me about Games Workshop. You only really need the rules to play, you can just use bits of card or something for the troops or whatever, but whenever I would go into a store, i'd have this overwhelming urge to buy everything in there. And that stuff is expensive.....so glad i stopped when i was 13 and bought a PS1 lol

I oddly remember that thing... never played it, but this kid in town played these games with his brother and dad all the time.
I hated that kid, I remember he once got me to play one of them table top D&D games with him and all the pieces... he refused to let me touch anything. He wouldn't even let me roll the freakin' die.
So yeah, I left, and that was my only experience with it. IMO playing on pen and paper and picking some one to be the dungeon master and make the story up all on his own is much more fun. A lot more imagination and good times! Though my brothers loved killing me off for no reason at time by pitting me unwillingly against hordes of enemies I have no chance of.
meh, that's what brothers are for. I'd rather them kill me on paper then hang me out the second or third story window with only a jump rope to climb back in.

You could use those models with the 4th edition epic rules, which are downloadable here http://www.specialist-games.com/epic/rulebook.asp
Your only problem would be finding someone to play against as most people play warhamer (fantasy) or warhamer 40k

I guess you could play 40k with epic minis, you are missing quite a few types and your battle would be huge or very small. Its just not practical.
As for painting 6mm figures, very very carefully and from the inside out. Actually you can make them look pretty good with only a soso paint job and an ink wash. Since they are small most people wont notice how detailed they are. Also you need good paint and a fine brush. The finer the particles the better the paint, for this, also the more expensive. Some people swear by Testors, Games Workshop, Imperial, or some other company, personally I like AppleBarrel since it is the only one I can get locally without driving for thirty minutes (I know its rubbish). But when painting sub 9mm I like Floquil paints. They are for Z/N or HO railroad modelings, but they work mighty fine on pewter with a proper basecoat.
There may be more tricks to it, but the most 6mm Ive done is epic tanks and a set of Ogre minis. Like most my experience is more with the 10mm (Memoir44/Battlelore and Splinterlight Minis), and a good bit of 28mm (Games Workshop, Reaver, Grenadier, etc). Thats enough tooting my own horn for now...
