What are the best Dreamcast games that AREN'T shooters?

Post by Retrogamer0001 »

I've been thinking about expanding my Dreamcast collection and I'm not sure what games are out there that I should be looking at. I'm not a shooter fan at all, so please omit those. I already own Sonic Adventure, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Slave Zero, and Seaman, so any others would be greatly appreciated!

Skies of Arcadia is a wonderful RPG, and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

get Maken-X

its different from many games out there.

It has a nice art style, similar to other, more recent atlus games.

Soul Calibur is the epitome of 3D fighting on the DC. (Though it doesn't mean Dead or Alive 2 and Tech Romancer are any slouches.)
Love it or hate it, the dozens of recycled sprites in Marvel vs Capcom 2 still make it the most exciting 2D shoot'em up on the console. Though for more traditional 2D fare, stick with SF3: 3rd or KoF'99:DM -- there's another KoF'99 (EVO) based on the arcade game with Strikers, but DM is based on '98 with a huge roster. (Want something more stylish? Last Blade 2 and JoJo's Bizzare Adventure)

Wanna import fighters? Capcom vs SNK 2 should be up there with Guilty Gear X. Throw in Fire Prowrestling D if you enjoy purowresu.

Skies of Arcadia is not Phantasy Star V, but it's close enough. (If you like your RPGs more linear, the equally polished Grandia II is available.) Lodoss War is a pretty good hack-n-slash while the Evolution games were a rogue-ish RPG in a very cute and cozy setting. Jet Set Radio (Jet Grind Radio) is trendy cel-shaded adventuring to the MAX!

Got a party? Power Stone 1 & 2, Chu Chu Rocket, Toy Commander. Tony Hawk Pro-Skater 2, NBA 2k2 and Bomberman Online are some great multi-player titles. Even though Space Channel 5 is 1P, the dance-beats make a great crowd-pleaser. And feed your arcade-side with Crazy Taxi 1 & 2. Virtua Tennis, Tennis 2k2 (with kick-ass minigames). Gauntlet. and Typing of the Dead (you need 2 DC keyboards or 2 keyboard adapters) -- seriously, TotD is hilariously engaging if you can get multi-player! (The PC version requires 2 PCs linked via crossover.)

If you've got cash for accessories, twinsticks are the ONLY way to enjoy Virtua-On:OT and samas for Samba de Amingo.

And even though you don't like shooters, I suggest Gunbird 2 (which is short AND funny for 1P or 2P... and only $10) and heavily heartily handily endorse/adore BANGAI-O which controls like a low-G platformer with lots of bullets.
My scheduling skills have died of dysentery; I hope to visit at least on a monthly basis.
Still, don't forget to tip your waitress.
