The games you can't play, literally

Post by Erik_Twice »

While most games are easily accesible or can be emulated, there's a handful that are so hard to find or require such specific controls that even a collectors of this site would have huge troubles to play them. And I know we all have at least one we would love to play but there's no way to.

Here's one: Crackin'DJ by SEGA

I discovered this one by hearing the game's version of OutRun in the 20th anniversary and it seems to sit in an unconfortable middle for emulation, as it's too modern to run in MAME and even if I could get it running I would need the turntable controllers, something impossible when the game saw no home release. Dammit Sega.

The cab can be had for 2K$ at least

Any game with a really narrow field of view (like the original Resistance or Call of Duty) makes me slightly nauseous and gives me a killer headache.

I have this issue as well depending on where I'm playing. Sitting on my couch 6ft or so away from the TV, fine. It still seems cramped, but, I won't get sick.

If on my monitor though, it's terrible. I don't get headaches, but I do get this weird tunnel vision effect and it hurts my eyes.

Until I bought an HDTV, any current-gen title with HD graphics was a no-go if it had small text.

I played through the original Dead Rising on an SDTV using composite cables.

Yikes... I didn't even try tackling that one, since I was on s-video and my TV was like 19 inches.

I don't imagine that Boong-Ga Boong-Ga would work too well on MAME.

Steel Batallion.

...and to a lesser extent, other mech games that use dual sticks. A dual stick control scheme can be mapped well to the keyboard, and even to a dual shock controller, but nothing beats the actual flight yokes.

I've played a Crackin' DJ 2 on my last trip to California. A friend of mine actually bought one from an arcade and now has it in his garage.

You can actually see more about their home arcade here: http://www.facebook.com/bemaniland?sk=info
