I remember Cadash being very castlevania-like - one character even has a whip.

If you have an interest in Japanese doujin games, I would recommend you try out the Koumajou Densetsu games (1. Scarlet Symphony and 2. Stranger's Requiem).

Interesting mix of well done original graphics and blatently stolen Castlevania graphics. But then it got to the boss fight. I like a good bullet hell, but I don't want bullet hell in my Metroidvania.
