Marvel to include digital download codes in all $3.99 comics



Media Release -- Marvel is proud to announce that, beginning June 2012, all Marvel super hero comics priced at $3.99 will include codes for free digital copies of those same issues on the Marvel Comics app for iOS and Android devices at no extra cost! That's right, the most-talked-about comics in the industry—including Avengers, Captain America, Invincible Iron Man, Mighty Thor, Amazing Spider-Man. Wolverine & The X-Men and more—will come packed with a code to ensure fans have the most critically acclaimed stories with them anytime, anywhere.

"We're committed to bringing fans the best value in comics. By including codes for free digital copies in all our $3.99 super hero comics, we're doing just that" said David Gabriel, SVP of Sales, Marvel Entertainment. "We've seen a tremendous response to the digital codes in Avenging Spider-Man, our Season One graphic novels and the Ultimate Comics line. The positive reactions from both retailers and fans make it clear that including these codes with our books drives customers into comic stores on a repeated basis."

Marvel made comic book history in 2011 by announcing all titles in the Ultimate Comics line would include codes for free digital copies on the Marvel Comics app, with unrivaled incentives for comic shop retailers. Then, in 2012, Marvel announced the acclaimed Season One graphic novels would also include similar codes making them the first graphic novels to ever include codes for free digital copies at no extra cost.

I was orignally not a fan of trades. But the more I look, the more I have to pick them up. With a nigh on nonexistant income, along with a gaming addiction, I just can't pick up monthlies. Plus, the more booklike quality is great.

I also feel bad though, seeing as monthlies are the main income in the business.


So, I'm still on the same comics. All Star Western, Batman, Walking Dead, and more. I'm trying to get into the Goon. I'd also like to read into many others, but I just don't have the money. Like the TMNT comics, or Ninja Cowboy Viking.

Pulling out all the stops in anticipation of "Avengers vs. X-Men," Marvel Comics has revealed a seven page preview of "Avengers vs. X-Men" #1 by Brian Michael Bendis with art by John Romita Jr. The first seven pages of the publisher's crossover event, released via EW.com, features a meeting between Captain America, Iron Man and the President detailing the dangers of a Phoenix force returned, teases Wolverine's choice between two teams and sets the stage for the conflict between Cyclops and Cap.

During a 2011 "AvX" press event, Bendis teased the incoming challenges for the Avengers during the conflict. "We've got a very interesting arc for the Avengers," Bendis said. "What's been going on lately is that they've been tested...they're wondering what it means to be an Avenger...when the world is throwing one terrible disaster at them after another...it takes a toll on a society and the Avengers are left to take the blame for it, as it were. They're going to want answers from Captain America." The writer further mentioned members of both the Avengers and X-Men, such as Wolverine and Storm, would play a big role in the story.

In January, Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso spoke to the plans for "AvX: Versus," the only stand-alone tie-in series for the event, which expands a number of bouts between Earth's Mightiest Heroes and Marvel's Merry Mutants. "Let's be clear: there's lots and lots of fighting in "AvX," Alonso said. "In fact, so much fighting that we often found ourselves saying, 'If only we had more space for this cool slugfest between Red Hulk and Colossus!' And that's where 'AvX: Versus' comes in. It provides the real estate. It's pure eye-candy. Cover-to-cover fighting with little to no plot or exposition -- just some of our best artists cutting loose from scripts by some of our best writers, including some of our 'AvX' writers. We're going right for the fanboy jugular. We're not looking to win an Eisner, you know? This is the least 'essential' but most fun tie-ins we've ever done."

The seven page preview follows a number of "AvX" reveals from Marvel, including a five page preview of Bendis and Jason Aaron's "Avengers vs. X-Men" #0, "AvX" cover reveals throughout the month of January and most recently Sara Pichelli's "Avengers vs. X-Men" #3 variant cover. The oversized issue of "Avengers vs. X-Men" #1 hits stores in April.

I really like the amount of care and effort that goes into some trades. This is one of my favorites in my collection:



The book is huge and has a nice hardcover. The art is just so much better on these large pages than it was on the smaller pages of the the original comics. The cover art is gorgeous and there's a lovely red bookmark inside the book as well. The whole thing just looks classy, has a nice, hefty weight to it, and just makes you proud to own it. Plus, these stories work so much better when combined together into one book. It's like a Slayer anthology and really takes you through the history of the entire Slayer lineage, including Buffy's place in it. It feels like these stories were meant to be put together in one book. The best part is that it's all canon due to Joss Whedon's involvement. I wish it had some Faith stuff though. I don't remember reading a single story involving her in that book

I'm actually reading the same things you are, though I've only just barely starting reading The Walking Dead. Batman has been amazing and convinced me to pick up a few issues of Scott Snyder's old Detective Comics run. I enjoy All Star Western, but Hex's story just seems to be meandering about aimlessly lately. I wish that book had a main plot line and a central villain for him. It just seems to have little direction, which is a shame given its great cast, solid dialog and excellent art.

I think part of the problem is that they keep forcing him the writers to write into the crossovers with Batman. As much as I love the idea of them kind of having similar stories going, it kinda burns Hex.

I'm trying to get some more out of the older Hex, like the last run. But no central storyline hurts it. There is one story, which I have yet to find. Its a two or three run comic, with Jonah helping someone, I believe it was a group of Mormans, and has that contrast of black, white, and the red of blood on the snow going...

What would be a good comics site? As much as I love superhero comics, I have a preferance for other types. I have problems keeping up though, and was wondering if there are any sites that could help me there. I like slightly less known, more out of the ordinary comics. IE, I prefer Darkhorse, Image, and self published over the bid Dos. I like western comics, etc.

I just need a good site so I can keep up.

I don't know if you're a fan of Joss Whedon, but this site keeps up with anything comic related he is involved in, or anything comic related that former friends and colleagues of his work on (like Felicia's Day's the Guild). All of those things tend to fall under either Darkhorse or IDW
