It's basically what you'd expect from the series. If you liked the previous entries, you'll like 4. If you didn't, it won't win you over. I think it kinda went overboard trying to tie up so many loose ends n' things, and only got worse with regard to cutscene frequency/length. When the game actually lets you play though, it's pretty refined, and fun.

These quotes make me sad. As dsheinem said earlier in the thread Uncharted 2 is one of the best games of this generation. Popular shouldn't be a death knell for a game. Battlefield 3 may be a "dudebro" game, but it's multiplayer is great fun.

My recommendations are:
The Darkness
Uncharted
Heavy Rain
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Braid
Metal Gear Solid 4
Limbo
Enslaved
Warhammer 40K: Space Marine

Glad I found this thread, I'm in a similar predicament (out of touch with modern gaming but curious about certain games) and was going to start a similar thread anyway.

Infact, the reason I'm interested in buying a PS3 is actually because I will soon be purchasing two of the following arcade sticks for my Emu gaming HTPC, which are also PS3 compatible:

http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=1428 ... n9tped90a5

I once borrowed a friend's PS3 while he was away and in that time I bought Skate3, which I really enjoyed as I used to skateboard as a kid, but I'm more interested in Fighters and Shmups for use with the arcade sticks, so I thought buying a second hand PS3 might make more sense than upgrading my PC with better graphics and better processing.

One thing no one has mentioned in this thread is whether to go with PAL or NTSC. I'm from the UK but live in Beijing. Here they mainly sell Hong Kong PAL systems and Japanese NTSC systems. I'm assuming PS3 games are region locked, does anyone know if there are any remarkable Japanese titles not available in the west that I should be keeping my options open for. I'm worried about limiting myself.

Another point I wish to raise is the issue of jailbreaking PS3s. As I'm sure you can imagine, it's very common practice to jailbreak your PS3 here in China. Most storekeepers give you the option to jailbreak it for you when they sell it to you, and for some extra cash will kindly supply you with a harddrive full of games. My brother has told me however, that if you jailbreak you PS3 you will be banned from PSN and will be unable to play games online or get DLC. Is this true?

Last question, does anyone here have any experience with hooking up PS3 controllers to your PC and using them as wireless controllers for emulation? I've been looking for some new DualShock-esque controllers for my HTPC, and thought If I'm buying a PS3 I might as well use the PS3 controllers instead, if I can.

So three points:

- Should I get a Japanese PS3?
- Jailbreak?
- PS3 Controllers on PC?

Many thanks.

PS3 is region free.
I know little to nothing about the PS3 jailbreak scene.
MotioninJoy will get PS3 controllers working on PC. With this program you can even have them emulate Xbox 360 controllers for some of the newer games that require Xbox 360 controllers.

Region free eh?! Always a plus! Anyone got any recommendations for some crazy japanese only titles?

I've read a little about Motioninjoy, from what I heard it makes your PS3 controllers work great on PC but only when connected via a USB cable. This sound ridiculous, you've gotta be able to link it to the PC wirelessly, right?

You can probably do wireless if you have bluetooth on your PC. I do not have bluetooth on my laptop and do not have a bluetooth USB dongle so I have not really looked into it.

I don't have many Japanese recommendations for the PS3, but I will list the few that I have.

AquaPazza (upcoming fighter featuring characters from a few different visual novels: To Heart, Utawarerumono, Tears to Tiara)
Arcana Heart 3 (also has European release, US is PSN only)
Gal*Gun
The iDOLM@STER

There are a few G.rev shmups. Mamoru-kun and Under Defeat HD. I know a few other members will have more recommendations. I have more imports on the Wii and 360 than PS3..

Did some googling...

There seem to be some interesting Japanese exclusives, exploration games like the underwater one and holiday one from this link:

There's also a game called Safari or something like that where you're a photographer in Africa, and a high speed Taiwanese train simulator. Interesting!
