MGS HD collection vs originals

Post by sabrage »

So I was pretty much all set to buy this collection just for Peace Walker until this week... I didn't have a PS2 on hand so I had no way to play 2/3, and I wasn't planning on getting Peace Walker but they both kind of fell in my lap. So, considering that I already have the PSP Peace Walker and the PS2 Substance and Subsistence, is it really worth my money to pick up the HD Collection? If the controls and multiplayer are that much better in the PS3 Peace Walker, that would probably be enough to sell me.

The HD collection is worth buying for Peace Walker alone. I played Peace Walker on the PSP and it was great...but it made my hands cramp something fierce. Peace Walker demands a full sized controller.

The other two games are hit and miss. MGS2 in HD is a bit of a let down. It does not look that different and some features (like Snakeboarding) were actually removed.

MGS3 on the collection is a bit better. It honestly looks markedly improved and the extras from the Subsistence collection (which is kinda expensive) are all there. The visuals look a little too soft, however, and I sometimes have trouble seeing things in the distance. This could just be me, though.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I say go for it, as I think it's a great value. I own both Sons of Liberty AND Substance, along with Subsistence, and still bought this.

As stated before, Skateboarding was removed, as was Snake vs. Monkey for MGS3, but everything else is there. What let me down was how they changed confirm to X and cancel to O, rather than leave it like it originally was, but that's just my preference.

Peace Walker is also a very good reason to buy this game. It was good on the psp, but the transition to an actual controller is substantial. It has never felt, or looked, better. If you're worried about money, you can always wait for a sale or price drop, but pick it up nonetheless.

It's more about the graphics than anything. I know I have a very hard time trying to play Xbox and PS2 games these days due to the outdated graphics. I say go buy the collection.

MGS 3 on PS2 runs about 30 fps while the HD Collection version runs 60 fps. That is the reason why I bought it.

I already owned all three games before I picked up the HD Collection, and I say it was still worth it. MGS2 looks super crisp, MGS3 runs at 60 FPS (it ran at like 25 on PS2), and Peace Walker controls leagues better than it did on PSP. All you lose is the skateboarding minigame from Substance and Snake vs Monkey and Demo Theater from Subsistence.

Demo Theater is there when you beat the game but the Secret Video portion is gone.

X2

I'm not a big handheld gamer and for a game like Peace Walker I have to experience it on a big screen with full controls. I'm a huge MG fan and when they announce PW on the PSP I was disappointed. But loving it on the 360

Another thing to note, MGS2 and MGS3 have slow loading codecs for some reason. In the PS2 originals, you were transferred to the codec or radio screen without much loading at all. But in the HD collection, it's not long or anything, but there's a noticeable loading time when going into codec or radio.

Nothing big, but a bit annoying on certain occasions.

I noticed, but I thought maybe I was mis-remembering the speed of the originals. But if someone else has noticed too, then I guess they really have slowed down.
