How would it get scratched in a pocket with nothing else inside?

I have carried my Game Boy Micro, iPhone, digital camera (with huge lcd screen) in various pockets, front and back, and have had no scratches.
Dust, pocket lint, etc. I wouldn't want to risk it, especially with how awesome the screen is on the Vita.

Hmm. I never had trouble with the original PSP in my pocket. I'd still probably put a screen protector on the Vita because it's a touch screen and people still seem to think you can use fingernails on them. :x

My PSP-3000 screen scratched with me just looking at it. Not deep scratches but scratches nevertheless. In fact, it scratched while in a damn case. I've got a screen protector on it now, but damn does the plastic over the screen scratch easily. Vita seems much more rugged.

They're called handhelds not pocket systems (with the exception of the gameboy pocket and the NGP obviously). Handhelds have almost never been designed with the intention of you putting them in your pocket. The original post seems to indicate there was once a time when this was true, but it never was.

Game and Watch? no
Tiger handhelds? no
original Gameboy? no
Game Gear? no
TurboExpress? no

We got closer with the likes of the gameboy pocket, NGP, and GBA SPs and Micros. The Micro is probably the most pocketable system but look at how small the screen ended up being!

I think handhelds are most commonly used while traveling and, face it, when traveling we have bags to carry stuff in lol

This thread makes me want to get a GBA Micro, but the SP+ is just so perfect for GBA, GBC, and GB games.

Actually, I beg to differ. Unless I was wearing jeans, I could fit the GBclassic brick in my front pockets. Various Game & Watch designs were also about the size of a GBSP, so those were portable.

The GBMicro can fit in your breast pocket, and the high-quality screen remains quite visible despite giving up 33% from its SP/GBA counterpart.

No doubt about it--GB Micro is the ultimate portable! Man, you could almost tuck that thing behind your ear. The iPhone makes for a pretty good portable gaming device, too (although some would argue that it's not a legitimate gaming device...but that's a conversation for another post).

For what it's worth, I'm that dork with a man bag, so carrying a Vita around wouldn't be a problem. Maybe that's your solution? It's an incredibly handy thing to have, even if you do look like a dork.
