Any free sites to catalog my collection for others to see?

Post by Zevin_Mars »

I feel like if I'm on a retro gaming forum, I need to start engaging in some good old fashioned passive aggressive collector's dick waving. :P jk

But in all seriousness, I would like to have my collection cataloged online in an easy to navigate format. Any sites let me do this?

RFGeneration is what most people use here.
There was a thread pretty recently where we talked about some alternatives because of some recent issues RFGeneration had, might be worth digging it up.

RFGen for sure. It was hacked a little while ago, but it's now fully functional again. The other big alternative is backloggery, but all entries are manual input, unlike RFGen which has a database.

I haven't found a great tool yet either. To actually catalog my collection I use Excel, but there's always the glaring issue of not being able to share that in a signature. If you find something great, let us know!

I'd echo the others saying RF Generation and Backloggery... there's a handful of others out there but those are definitely two very popular choices around here.

Backloggery can't compare for categorization and layout... But I use both anyways. Adding everything back into RFGeneration is going slowly, though.

A database is only good when the individual puts the work in and continually updates it. Because of the cloud hack issues or a chance of a site going down, I prefer to store my data locally, too much work to risk losing online. This kills showing off your layout for anyone to see unless you upload your file somewhere though.

Maybe create a local database such as a spreadsheet using Excel? The advantage is you can set the search parameters the way you like. Search by year, system, controller type, genre, color case or cart, country, or whatever custom info you want to add. MS Office files is the standard that can read in most PCs and Macs, anyone who receives the file should be able to read it.

I'm a user of VGcollect. http://www.vgcollect.com

It's still in it's beginner stages but shows great potential with the ability to add information to carts and a WIP android app.
