It has begun to make strange horizontal flickers, mostly in the middle of the screen right after turning the monitor on. I've been using it for 5 years now, so it's not like this hasn't been coming. This is what my monitor looks like:
Good night, sweet prince.

I love computer CRTs, but IME they don't hold up at all.
No, they don't. I've gone through way more CRT monitors in my life than TVs. I actually have an identical monitor on another PC, but it's in even worse shape. It has a dead pixel, and the refresh rate is so low that it bugs my eyes. I've tried upping the rate, but it did nothing.
What really burns is that I passed on a free Trinitron CRT monitor right before I discovered these issues. I figured "this is nice, but what will I do with it?" D'oh!

I've never had a CRT fail on me until recently. I've got 2 IBM P70 monitors bought brand new that are still going strong after 15 years of service. The only CRT that has failed on me is the 31inch Mitsubishi TV I had and that died after 20 years of service. I loved that TV too.
Seeing that it's a Compaq monitor I would have to assume it's got pretty cheap parts inside and I'm not terribly surprised to hear that it doesn't go the distance.

maybe CRTGAMER has a fix?
I don't have money to buy anything expensive, so I'm gonna keep an eye out for them at thrift stores.
