Can't believe no one has mentioned Total Annihilation yet. It still is one of the best RTSs I've ever played.

Well that's a point of contention, but undeniably Total Annihilation>SupCom 2.

Well, Rise of Nations was the first suggestion but I will concur with that. The time I spent with that game was not particularly long, but it was intensive. I would stay at my friends place and play for hours. He would wake up and get shitty at me monopilising his computer in my underpants. He eventually burnt it, gave it to me and deleted it from his computer.

That and Warcraft 2, if I recall correctly, the Warcraft 2 disc would install on mac and windows. Goddamn that was a great game. The same friend used to kick my ass roundly at that game. Its OK, I enjoy being beaten at games. It is so much more satisfying when you can observe what your opponent does, and build up a strategy to beat them. I eventually did, and beat him solidly a few times before he gave up on Warcraft 2 forever, claiming that he could never get good enough to beat me. And he was being serious. This was around 2003, and he's never picked it up again since, despite my cajoling. No-one I knew would ever play it with me after that, so I retired too.

Every1 gave me a different answer
I think there are only 2 or 3 people who agreed on Rise of Nations

I also never played Starcraft

So that leaves me with age of empires, II or III?

Plus I want to play 1 civilization game, so which is?

There was a game I played a demo of ages ago called Pharaoh which was very interesting but i stopped playing because I had to pay for it and I didn't have a credit card...blah blah blah

do you know it or know if it is still relevant?

I used to play it for hours using a 2004 videocard, so I say go for III.

There is only 1 RTS that I truly liked(not a big fan of them) and that is Knights in the Knightmare for the DS....though it blends os many genres into one, im not even sure if it truly counts as an RTS.

If you are playing single-player, then avoid Age of Empires. It was a great multiplayer game, but the solo campaigns are not that exciting. The AI is pretty bad and very predictable.

Rise of Nations has the best feeling AI. The game design itself is very conducive to a well-performing AI. The game design is impeccable. If I had to choose a single RTS to play for eternity, it would be Rise of Nations. No question about it.

As for a Civilization game, Civ IV is the best overall. The graphics are great. The AI is the best in the entire series. The GUI is efficient and well thought out. The tech tree is balanced. Everything just works the way it should. A quick read through the Civ 4 beginner's guide and you can get into this game more quickly than any other in the series. Avoid the expansions, as they add unnecessary complexity.
