I do wish the game industry would calm down with the over reliance of sequels and try to focus on more original IPs, but they do what is profitable.
Mostly this.

However, I'd also say that's probably an extension of just how many games are getting released period. Whether original IPs, sequels, or remakes, most of us don't have time to play them all. To me, it's less a matter of being excited to play a similar game, but more that it can mean (optimally) "needing" to play 2-3+ games instead of just the one. For games with a real narrative at least.

Anyone else feel this way, or do you still get jazzed for seeing the continuation of a series?
I feel the same way. At this point, I don't care if a new game is super ultra mind blowing. I am content to be ignorant of it and continue enjoying my existing games. I have more than enough to last me until I can't see the screen anymore.

Many times, I prefer the original game, even if the sequel is clearly "superior". The first game in a series often has more charm and is more of a unique experience. It can be a little rough around the edges, which makes it more interesting to me.

I feel you've hit the nail on the head J T.

I'd also like to mention length fatigue. So many people bitch about short single player experiences. Maybe it's just me, but, anything over 10 hours is a stretch for me to complete. I tend to like my games to be around 4-5 hour experiences with some replay value thrown in for good measure (think challenge modes). Hopefully there'll be a decent summer game drought where I can get through some of my backlog.

There's too many damn games, and many of them are too damn long.

I don't have a problem with lots of sequels, but of course we can't play all of them :D If it's a game with lots of narrative and I'm invested in the story, I'll hunt down or wait for the sequel excitedly. I remember after I played Valkyrie Profile 2, I ordered the original the very day I was done. Couldn't get enough. On the other hand, I tried to play all the Mana games a while ago. I got sick of them pretty quick. Played Final Fantasy Adventure, Sword of Mana, and Secret of Mana. Definitely enjoyed the first two but didn't care enough to get the rest. With me it's just a matter of not having enough time to play all the games.

See, I like sequels for good games. About the only times I don't are when they cock up the game mechanics (C&C4, the new Syndicate). It falls in to my "this was good, I would like more of it" mindset. I'm also the sort of person who can easily eat the same thing for lunch for two years and not grow bored of it.

I think as long as the sequel offers a pleasant new experience, I won't feel disappointed about it. But this can't really be determined by any weird measurement. I may like Castlevania sequels more than other people. Likewise, I do not like Halo sequels nearly as much as other people.

This gen is seriously bad about it. I actually like the Mass Effect series, the low amount I've played at a friend's house at least. I don't see a problem with it continuing, neither do I have problems with games like Gears of War or Bioshock, but stuff that gets to the point of out of hand, like Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, or, dare I say it, Pokemon and Resident Evil. RE should have ended at 4, if even gotten that far. Pokemon, past Ruby/Sapphire, seems to pulled out to me. They ran out of ideas after that point, and based Pokemon off the same things.

Meh, I like it on things I like, but not on stuff I don't like. Opinions are fun!
