Sequel fatigue

Post by J T »

I find myself just ignoring news about sequels lately, even for games I originally liked. I think there are just so many good games out there and so many unique experiences that I don't really care to play another Assassin's Creed, another Halo, another Final Fantasy, another Ghost Recon, or even another Mass Effect. Anyone else feel this way, or do you still get jazzed for seeing the continuation of a series?

Only series that have proven themselves worthy to continue. Most do not.

I wholeheartedly agree. I find myself getting more "jazzed" for developers resurrecting classic titles from my youth. Mass Effect 1 & 2 are still sitting in the shrink, and now the third installment is launching. I can't freaking keep up anymore (and that's fine) nor do I really care to.

You hit the nail on the head here dude.

It depends how frequently the series comes out, like if it's yearly I don't get too excited, but if the original game came out years ago and it's getting a sequel or reboot I tend to get significantly more excited. I do wish the game industry would calm down with the over reliance of sequels and try to focus on more original IPs, but they do what is profitable.

I wouldn't feel fatigued with Shenmue III.

I agree, however, considering I can barely keep up with all of the Call of Booty's, Mass Effects, Assasin's Creeds, etc.

I'm looking forward to Mario Party 9 which is out next week in the US. People in Europe say that it's a big improvement over 8 which is the worst of the lot. Yes, I will have all 9 and no, I'm not tired of it.

Ditto for the Mario 64 series (Mario Sunshine, Galaxy 1 & 2).

...Perhaps this is off topic. :? People bitch and moan about games like The Last Guardian getting delayed. Man, I encourage it! I need time to play catch up. Seriously, how in the freaking heck do people pound through so many AAA new releases? It's like going to Blockbuster and renting a movie. People just keep pounding through 'em.

I guess I don't know how to decide when I Think a game is worthy to continue. Bioshock was a perfectly good game, but I had no desire to play Bioshock 2. On the other hand, Bioshock: Infinite looks great. I guess it depends on how much of a radical departure the sequel is from the original... but then, games like the upcoming X-Com or Syndicate don't seem very exciting because they are too much of a radical departure from their origins (but not enough of a radical departure from everything else being released today).

Depends on the genre. If its a 40 hour+ game, then I most likely will not be interested in a sequel. If a 40+ hour game already has a sequel, that will usually deter me as well. I just don't have time for games that long.

however, I'm excited as tits for the new Dodonpachi!
