NES has white dots across the screen on the black parts

Post by Armymanis »

Hey guys. Love the NES, but recently when I put the games into play, whenever there is black on the screen a bunch of white dots appear. What seems to be the problem with it? The sound comes out really good and I can see the picture clearly, but the white dots on the black parts of the screen annoy me.

You probably just need to clean your games/system, or replace your 72-pin connector if that doesn't work.

It's possible that it's caused by something else, but the odds are pretty low, and any fix would cost more than just cleaning your connectors.

Are you using the RF adapter or composite to connect the NES to your TV?

Try using composite and see if that helps. RF adapters can add static that shows up quite clearly on black backgrounds.

I was having that same problem before I replaced my 72pin connector 2 years ago - even cleaning the console with a cleaning kit and the cart's contects with Xylene didn't fix it. As soon as I dropped the $4 + S&H on a new connector it's been running perfectly. This same console I opened the shell and ran keys over the contacts while Megaman 3 was running to get to new levels on in 1993. They're built like tanks. Yours just needs new treads.

It does sound like usual cart/connector related problem but at least you can still get some parts for the system,i hope it is not something more serious like a capacitor or voltage related problem.

Concur with DinnerX, that seems like RF interference. Is the metal shielding missing inside? In addition to going with RCA cables, make sure other electrical devices such as a laptop, portable fan or heater is not nearby.

Problem fixed! It was the RF adapter. Those RF Adapters don't last long! Kind of sad! :( Anyways, I was able to find some red, yellow, and white cables I had lying around the house and that seemed to fix my problem :)

Thanks everyone! Like I said this is a great forum! :)
