They just don't want to move their asses from the pile of money they are sitting on. They don't want to move a finger to make money out of the smaller franchises they have.
Sorry about the negativity but lately I can't help but think that the management world is fucked up
A game company trying to keep money by not releasing a game that won't sell? GASP! That's unheard of!
There's a huge difference between selling well and hving one million preorders. Only a handful of games sell that amount and no game ever in history has had one million people actively asking for it.
For the record, huge successes like Rollercoaster Tycoon 2, Empire Earth, Unreal Tournament or Return to Castle Wolfestein sold only one million copies.
A game like Darkstalkers will never sell a million units before it's even made. That's a fact.
But there's no need to, there's a lot of profit to be made from smaller runs. From much smaller runs. Given the neccesary budget to make such a game it wouldn't need a lot of units to sell very well.
It's not about not selling, it's about not selling millions, which is apparently all that matters to many companies today. Guess stronger industries like film didn't crash for that reason.
