And this is another problem I'm having. By Googling "top Ps3 games" etc, the lists are coming up with loads of FPSs and games like Uncharted etc, that no one here has mentioned. Friends have told me to get the Mass Effect series too? Are these games just over-hyped shallow games? Or are they really as amazing as people say?

I think Uncharted 2 might be my favorite game this generation.

^^Got Uncharted 2 for Christmas last year. I played it once and I enjoyed the cutscenes, but I never had any fun playing it. Oh well.

I have not played Mass Effect, but the Elder Scrolls game seem to be legit RPGs - a little on the easy side but cool atmosphere. A lot of the guys who make "top PS3 games" lists haven't even come close to playing all the PS3 games - many don't play anything that can't be found at Wal Mart. It's probably a better idea to look for top games in a certain genre.

I was going to buy Uncharted 2 tomorrow with the console, but they don't have it in stock. Might get it online sometime then.

I'm just ridiculously out of touch with this generation, so it's hard to know what I'll like or not without playing some games. Are there any Action/Adventure games that think outside the box (like Fahrenheit/ Indigo Prophecy)? Actually, which reminds me, is Heavy Rain any good? And how does it compare to the previous game they made?

Make sure you get Wipeout HD! I have about 10 games for my PS3, but that's the only one I've really been playing for the past month or two.

Most of it is just subjective, and that doesn't always get communicated well in topics like this.

Uncharted, for my money, is a fun series, the second one particularly. If there's a supply issue, keep in mind that the first two games were rereleased in a twin pack, so that might be what the store has.

Similarly, I've enjoyed the Mass Effect games a lot and would recommend 'em.
Actually, which reminds me, is Heavy Rain any good?
It's...interesting, at least. The game is predominately a long series of quicktime events that's sewn together in such a way that you can fail almost all of them and the game keeps going. Which is great, unless you actually wanted to succeed in order to see the other paths through the game (you can reload/etc, but there's no integrated mechanic to retry). I would rather there be a conscious choice determining a lot more of it.

Had you not already mentioned Catherine I'd recommend that - not the same style exactly, but in that vein.

If you're really not up on modern gaming at all, you might also consider Portal 2, Assassin's Creed 2, or one of the many other highly rated, best selling series. MGS4 if you played the earlier ones. Nice thing about getting a PS3 now is that so many titles are reduced in price and/or on greatest hits, so it's not as big a deal to give something a whirl. Also remember that the modern generation has downloadable demos

I'm hoping you got a Slim PS3, if you want to be absolutely sure it works and money's not too much of an issue new is always the best option.

Fat PS3s are prone to hardware failures such as the power supply, Blu-Ray lasers crapping out, and the dreaded Yellow Light of Death, which usually requires completely tearing the console apart and fixing any issues with the mobo, CPU, and GPU. The Green Light of Death is a video setting problem and has the easiest fix known to man. But if you really want to get rid of your PS2 then the 60GB Fat Model is the only one that is BC, and as such is already pricey.

The slims were designed with the engineering mistakes of the fat in mind and have mostly been fixed, your chance of having those failures is not completely gone but it is lessened considerably.

Now time for software, a console will forever be remembered by the common gamer by its library of exclusives and the PS3 completely blows the 360 out of the water in this regard.

I had fun with LBP, really a lot of the love it gets is about its customization features and the charm it has.
Uncharted is excellent once you realize its a video game rip off of Indiana Jones and steals gameplay from Gears of War but completely succeeds at both. You can't go wrong with Naughty Dog.
Valkyria Chronicles is still my favorite current gen RPG, so if you like strategy RPGs definitely give this one a shot.
Killzone 2 and 3 are good value if you want to give Guerilla's premier FPS series a shot.
3D Dot Game Heroes is a wonderful love letter to the top down Zelda games, but can be quite cryptic as to where you need to go next.
Heavy Rain is an interesting experience, I'd recommend playing it to see for yourself. First time had me completely hooked and I forgot to actually play the game.
Demon's Souls will make you want to rip your hair out, but its not unfair in its difficulty, it just requires patience and careful maneuvering.
The Resistance Series and Ratchet and Clank games are Insomniac's great additions to this generation.
Metal Gear Solid 4 is pretty much required gaming, if nothing else to have your own opinion of it.
That's not even close to all the exclusive experiences the PS3 has to offer, there's a lot on PSN.

Now before this goes any longer you should also check out some multiplatform games like Rockstar's games (my favorite this gen being Red Dead Redemption), Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and FFXIII and XIII-2 if you really want.

TL;DR
The PS3 is an amazing system, and with only one extra HDMI out on my monitor it is the one hooked up to it at all times.

Download the MAG demo on PSN. It's a lot of fun and free to play

I highly advise NOT getting Flower. Never have I ever wanted my money back after a "game" purchase until Flower. It should have been free and should have been considered a conceptual demo and not a game.

I'm actually mad it's a download and not a physical copy so that I could sell it in hopes of getting back even $1....
